Someone suggested adding Brewers Yeast to my lad's feed to see if it helped his sweet itch. Would this be ok when he's already on the following supplements?

TRM Hoofmaker Plus
half dose of Benevit
Feel Good 30 Science Formula Calmer (magnesium & B vits)

I'd like to try it of it may help but obviously don't want to overdose to the level where something may be harmful. I really don't want to cut out the above three supplements so anything I gave would be in addition.

I highly recommend brewers yeast for sweet itch

However I don't mix mine with anything else, but only because he doesn't actually need anything else at the moment!

Not knowing the ingredients of the above its hard to say - might be worth giving spillers a call as I have heard they are really helpful.

Would imagine Benevit & Hoofmaker would be fine.

However you might be feeding your horse too many supplements - does he really need all 3?

I personally wouldn't because at least two of your existing supplements have Vit B in them and brewer's yeast is full of it. I am sure there are more knowledgeable people who will say I am wrong, but personally I wouldn't.

Good point - although with sweet itch you are trying to pump up the B vits to make them repulsive to midges.

If you could calculate the dose of B vits in your current supplements your could adjust the standard dose of the brewers yeast down to prevent overdose.

However knowing how unhelpful the back of these products are, that might not be a straight forward exercise.

Overdosing on the B vits was what I was worried about, the last thing I want to do is cause a problem.

CotswoldSJ he does need these. His feet are dreadful - always have been - & the Hoofmaker Plus combined with the Benevit seem to get the best growth & quality. If I don't feed a hoof supplement (& this one seems to work best for him) the growth is impossibly slow & weak, adding a general vit & min supplement at half rate also seems to help for some reason. As for the calmer - believe me, he needs it

Brewers Yeast acts as a mild calmer also so I took my boy off the NAF Magic and haven't noticed a difference ...

Thanks Kezza but I'm not risking it! It might work but if it doesn't I have to pick up the pieces (all too often of me

) & each time leaves another dent in my self-confidence. Also the YO doesn't think he's any too safe now, if he had a "funny" spell I think I'd be asked to leave

.

Strange how calmers work for some horses but not others - I tried NAF Magic & even on full dose it had very little effect & I had to watch him eat or he'd kick the bucket over! FG30 he gobbles down & in summer & winter I can get away with feeding half dose
