Can I go hunting?

I have never been hunting but would really like to try it. The only problem is my 11 year old cob has stiff hocks and is unable to Jump anything bigger than about a foot! Are there any hunts out there that aren't too fast paced and are soft on newbies and jumping is optional? Or should I carry on dreaming? I am based in East Sussex.

Any help or advice is much appreciated!

You should be able to, you'll just have to go by word of mouth, the hunt I go with usually has about a 75% non-jumping field many of these are under 10, I am not 100% if they jump anything as I am not usually at the back, but I'm sure if you keep looking for them you will find them!

Find out where you local hunt is, call the hunt sec and explain your problem, and ask if and when they have non jumping field masters. Most hunts now realise that it isn't everyone's cup of tea to jump all these nice big obsticles and have introduced a 2nd fieldmaster for children and adults who wish to have a more gentle experience of hunting. Failing this find out when hunt newcomers days are- most hunts have them and they are, on the whole, catering for all ages and abilities and more gentle than a full hunting day.

our hunt secretary dosent jump, so she takes the non-jumpers with her. If shes not there for any reason there is always someone else who does the non jumping route. Like the others said phone your local hunt secretary, they will be able to give you advice.

try n get out to mid week meets that arent in school holidays if you can, tend to b a bit gentler n less crouded, bt yeh, ring th secretary n they'l gladly help you out. newcomers meets probably arent reli th best day 4 a newcomer tho, as ironic as it sounds, cos they noramally end up being a bit packed with horses flying evrywhere n a bit of excess jumping put in to spark some interest, but hey, there's only one way to find out what its really like!

I guess you will go out with the East Sussex and Romney Marsh? Have been to plenty of joint meets and you can certainly avoid jumping, they also have some super out of season rides. depends where you are because the Ashford Valley may be more accessible, but they jump a lot more!
