Basicly I'm trying to find out some info on travelling a very pregnant bitch (this coming week - so still hot). It is not my dog, but my SIL's. She is determined to have her weeks holiday with her parents next week so will take her bitch with her. Bitch is due to whelp 25th-28th this month. Maiden bitch (springer). I'm desperately worried that it is not only a bad idea to travel in the heat, but to move her at this stage of her pregnancy, and to stay away from home for a period of time.
Not to mention the parents also have a 1yr old springer, who loves to play!

I need to find some documents of what not to do (common sense seems not to apply here!) and to email them to her. She will not listen to either myself, her parents or my OH - her brother and if anything goes wrong, I'd never live it down if I didn't think I've done enough!

Her parents are soft touches and seemingly let her do it her way! (I wouldn't have her to stay myself!)

Any further advice much appreciated. Thanks.

Does her car not have air conditioning? I wouldn't want to travel any dog in a vehicle without it in hot weather. I digress, that's kind of secondary. No I wouldn't move a bitch who is two weeks away from whelping, however so long as she is home again at actual whelping time, and the journey isn't too long, and the bitch is familiar with where she is staying then maybe not too much to worry about.

Personally, I wouldn't want to stress a pregnant bitch by taking her away from her familiar home where she will probably be looking for a safe place to whelp. Hopefully, she has already been given a whelping box so she can get used to it before she starts labour? I would also worry about how she might react to another boisterous dog? Hormones and instincts kick in at this time. Could your SIL take her holiday and get someone to houses it the bitch???
A good book is The Book of the Bitch.
Was the holiday booked before the mating took place? Is SIL actually staying at her parents, or are they all going away together to somewhere new? Could her parents come and stay with her under the circumstances? I would also be very worried about the bitch meeting other dogs and possibly picking up an infection.

I would not travel a v pregnant bitch in this weather unless I absolutely had to. At this time the bitch needs the security of familiar surgoundings and should b getting used to sleeping in the whelping box. She will be uncomfortable enough in the last 10 days or so. Don't forget that 7 days before whelping the puppies line themselves up in readiness and this can cause the bitch to become quite distressed. I second having a copy of the book of the bitch to hand

I'm not sure how anyone with any sense of logic can think that a good idea- and I'm yet to have a dog!

Surely if it is just to see parents she can do that any time and the health/comfort of her dog would be more important?

You would have thought! I need a brick wall...
OH is going balding grey over this too. She isn't listening, and has just hung up on us trying again to get some sense through.:(

As above, I wouldn't consider travelling a pregnant bitch in this heat unless it was absolutely necessary, air con in the car or not. Bearing in mind that quite often taking a bitch for a drive will encourage labour it would not be a wise thing to do this close to whelping. Also she should be settling into her whelping area now, not being uprooted and taken to somewhere new. Although I don't think there are any specific rules, if you consider that you aren't supposed to transport a pregnant mare too close to foaling, bearing in mind the difference in gestation length I would think this would be a good pointer as to the sense in doing this to a bitch.
I sympathise OP, am I right in thinking you tried to advise your SiL about mating this bitch at the time, or was that someone else ?

She'll be away when the bitch is due. How do her parents feel about have the dog whelping at their home and then being left with the puppies for a few weeks? A distinct possibility.

Maybe get your brother to approach his parents in law to try and get them to understand the issues, so coming at it from the other side so to speak.

She sounds a complete div!
