I posted in the Sb about getting back on a horse, and have posted pics from yesterday, would just like some CC. With regards to the second horse I rode, each time I asked for trot, he blew into a flat out canter (but getting faster and faster) and he was so hard to slow down, I admit my hands were, at times, to my hips, and my heels way down, pushing all my weight down, using my voice etc to slow him down but he did ignore this a few times. I did manage to slow him after a while, and we kept to walk, so after some half halts and circle work, I asked for trot again and he did the same, except this time threw a couple of bucks in. I then saw someone else ride him and he behaved perfectly, so I think it was probably a case of him taking the mick, but any idea how I can stop this happening again? I don't want my confidence knocked before I've really started.

P.S. I haven't ridden for almost three years (Mum corrected me last night)

I'd go and get a couple of lunge lessons at a local RS if I were you. That will help you establish your balance and feel a little more secure in the saddle. It's hard to tell what is going wrong by your post, but it could be that you are hanging on to his mouth without realising, or something similar, which is causing him to try to run away.

A couple of lunge lessons would do you the world of good

Jumpthemoon - one of the girls at the yard said not to hold his mouth too hard, so I relaxed my hands a lot when riding him, but when he pelted away, I was told to pull my reins in to slow him down, which didn't work very well, so tried shifting my weight.

*Blushes* Thank you. I will definitely take the camera again next week, as hopefully I'll be more relaxed next week. Am meant to be trying out a horse next week as well, so fingers crossed!!
