Further to my "can horses tell when it's Sunday" thread - well, she can tell when it's a Bank Hol too as she's now in "horsepital"!
Having had to have the vet out to a mildly colicky Maiden yesterday night, we had vet out again at lunchtime today. Vet said she looked better (as in, vital signs, gut sounds etc) but owner's intuition told my mum she wasn't much better.
Mum has been checking her every two hours, and I got a call at 6.30pm to say that Maiden was flat out in the field (VERY uncharacteristic) and was barely moving / phased out. Mum called vet again and I made my way to field. Vet said to give her bute and wait two hours and update her.
Basically she laid in the field for two hours, looking worse and worse and barely responding to any sound or movement (though not colicky as such, not frantic and sweating and rolling - just like someone had hit her over the head and she needed to sleep; she'd lie flat, and sit up, and lie flat again, and stand for about a minute max, then lie flat again...) and we made arrangements to take her in to "horsepital".
Finally arrived at around 9pm, I was worried as I have had bad experiences in the past with the vet practice we took her to, but it was by far the closest and I always said colic would be the one thing I'd go back to them for. FAB vet took over, examined her, explained everything, took bloods and fluid from her abdomen etc etc.
She's a little concerned because of Maiden's lack of response to painkillers (as in, she perks up for about two minutes then gets worse) and that there's a bit of gut displacement on scanning her and a "very tight band of gut" on rectal examination. It sounds about 50:50 whether she'll go to surgery, but we assume her bloods were fine as we've not heard anything.
I have my mobile and my home phone stationed by my bedside in case my mum rings. I hate waiting
So yes, cookies and warm milk if you managed to get through that, and if anyone has any spare fingers I'd appreciate them being crossed for my lovely Maiden
(Still in shock...)
