On Wednesday, I am bringing my 8 year old TB mare home from hospital after a fetlock operation. She has to have 6 weeks box rest. She is very skinny. As well as ad lib haylage, I was going to feed Alfa A with speedibeet as I did before she went into hospital - but she was getting turnout for a few hours a day then. Will this be too much for her, or will it be ok. She will also have a lick in the stable and a feed ball to play with.

Alfa A is a very good source of protein which will help to repair any muscle. I however would be inclined to feed something along the lines of Hi Fi while she is boxed and feed this in the form of a hay replacer (perhaps mixed with Speedibeet and some high fibre cubes) alongside her haylage. Having different fibre sources in her stable to pick at adlib will prevent boredom and keep the gut moving and passing through which can sometimes slow right down when the horse isnt moving about freely.

I would also add pink powder to her feed so that not only does she receive adequate vits and mins but also digestive enhancers to help her gut keep working and also as a pick me up as she will no doubt be feeling a little sorry for herself.

Wishing her a speedy recovery :o

When my big (17.3hh) 3 year old TB filly came home from a hock arthoscopy and was in very poor condition and on box rest for 6 weeks, I used D&H Convalescent Diet and ad-lib hay http://www.dodsonandhorrell.com/products/horse-ranges/tailor-made/convalescent-diet.html. This D&H product is specifically formulated for horse's on box rest and recouperation. I found it very good at the time, so would recommend it in similar circumstances. It's a palatable mix and comparatively inexpensive.

Thanks. This sounds like a really good idea. Will get some Hi Fi and pink powder tomorrow. She takes ages to eat, so i can leave her with bucket in the mornings and mixed with speedibeet she'll probably still be going at it at lunchtime!
