My old boy (24) has developed a cough in the last 48 hours that wont go away, he is coughing constantly, no snot, he is eating and pooing and mooching around as normal but he looks depressed?

He has had COPD for many years, normally managed very well with haylage and not letting him get anywhere near straw. He is turned out 24/7 with access to a field shelter. He also has ringbone and is very arthritic. He's been retired for many years. He's used up so many lives with various injuries over the years.

Im so worried about him, he's my first horse and my baby and I know time is working against us.

Got the vet coming at 11.30.

Thanks everyone - he is still coughing - vet came - she has put him on ventipulmin for 7-10 days but thinks he may need to be on it longer. Still no snot seen but she says he is definitely wheezing. She took bloods which I should get the results of tomorrow - so fingers crossed. He still looks really miserable but is eating and drinking and tucking into his haylage. Not sure what the vet is looking for in the blood tests but tomorrow will tell.
Xxx

Perhaps he's just fed up with this flipping weather and wants some sun on his back...if he's eating OK, that's a good sign. Sometimes horses can get depressed but usually the vet can give something to perk him up again. Good strong vibes coming your way Horlicks.

If the ventapulmin doesn't help pretty quickly see if she will give him a steroid inhaler. Really helped my lad and it got him back on track and not needed anything since. He had got to the point that he could not walk up a hill without coughing - ventapulmin did nothing for him.

Sending you positive vibes!

Hope he feels better soon, my arthritic is really hating this weather at the moment. She's on equimins inflamerese I think it's called but its definitely helping her :) fingers crossed for you!
