Can I jsut check re recreational routes....

those paths marked with a diamond on O maps - can horses be ridden on recreational routes or National trails? I checked the BHS website and it says that horses cannot be ridden where they give way to foot access only - is this normally marked on an OS map? Thank you!

On your local council web site there should be a rights of way page that shows all bridleways ,and routes open to all traffic (BOATS byways open to all traffic)

On OS maps national trails will have the large dashed bridleway line symbol underneath the diamonds if horses are allowed. Sometimes the orange or green dots for a cycleway will be under the national trail diamonds and these are sometimes open to horses (best way if in doubt is to contact council). My local council have always been helpful and quick to reply to my emails about whether I have access but sometimes even they aren't sure but going to look at the route tends to show who can use it from the barriers or signs.
