Have had my new one about 6 weeks, and i just can't believe how wonderful he is :D I was expecting some teething problems and settling in time.....I didn't expect him to be the most perfectly behaved (especially for a 5 year old!) and generally charming horse I've ever known :D Anyone else feel like they landed on their feet from the get go with a new one?! I'm expecting it all to go wrong because he's set himself such a high bar, but in the meantime I can't stop smiling :D

Exactly how I feel with my new one! She'd only been over 1 day from Ireland when we bought her as a 5 yo. Thought when she was fed up abit with a bit more weight on her and feeling her feet she'd be a handfull.... Not as yet 6 months later :D:D:D Absolute little gem.
He sounds lovely! what do you plan to do with him?

This bodes well then :D Is it the grey in your sig? She's lovely.

Mine's also an Irish :) I plan on doing hopefully everything! He's just such a chilled and happy character, with great conformation, paces and jump - so at the moment I feel a little bit like the world is our oyster (the only thing holding us back is my riding and our current lack of transport :p). First plan is to get him doing dressage in the spring, then work on his jumping and xc next summer/autumn, before some hunting next season.

I didn't realise you'd got a new horse, he sounds and looks adorable, and being a chestnut with a white blaze he must be good :D

Sounds like you've found a good un, hope you get to do loads of fun things with him :)

Hi T :) Yes I bought him a few weeks ago.....wasn't planning on buying so soon but he came along, and was exactly what I wanted, so I went for it.
Today I hacked out with two hunters and a dressage horse from the yard, all of whom were borderline insane for various reasons (hunters v fit, spent most of it jogging/going sideways or backwards, the dressage horse performed some airs above ground)....my green 5 year old on his first hack in company in at least six months walked impeccably, took everything the Downs had to throw at him (children, dogs, galloping horses, traffic, machinery), trotted his enormous trot up the hills like he'd been doing it all his life, and gave a lead for the pansy hunters when they had worked themselves into a frenzy. I literally couldn't have asked for better behaviour....and this comes the day after a lesson where he left me in awe of his super paces once again :)

Can you tell I'm a bit smitten?!

How's you and George?

So nice to read posts like yours! My daughter bought a new horse in June this year and he is still the bees knees in my eyes, so easy and yet perks right up when needed, absolutely perfect for us. So even though I couldn't remodel my stupid kitchen because I let her borrow the money and she pays it back only in small chunks I don't care, he's a great horse and life is too short!

I did the same with a project baby ISH pretty fresh over from ireland just been backed ie could barely hold a canter and had been jumped 3 times. She has always tried her heart out for me and I can equally trust her to always jump even when the jockey mucks it up slightly, as I can trust her to potter round with a toddler or novice on her back. My theory so far is that its Irish mixed blood horses!

That said I have a new 2.5yo huge WB filly who is also proving to be a delight on the ground with a very straightforward brain and accepting nature, so if shes the same when the time comes under saddle I will be doubly blessed :).

Im glad you are so delighted with your new family member OP :) long may it continue, they definetely are worth their weight in gold! :D

Had some settling in problems with mine, so didn't feel like that from day 1 but that was due to an unsuitable yard, not him. Now i love him lots and he's nice and easy going :)

Yep when I got mine I was exactly the same.
I was expecting all sorts of trouble what with him being at the time a 4yr old ex-racer. On the contary he was perfect right away! I thought I had died and gone to heaven!
Bless him, he's such a dude :).

Twiglet - so pleased that he has settled so well. Glad you went with your heart!

I find the Irish horses we have to produce settle straight away but then I am a fussy thing when buying them in the first place!

Yes :D I just had such a feeling from him from the start, and he just seems to be proving me right so far.....and is just such a nice chap to be around. I'm an Irish convert :)

Woohoo, you made it onto the Downs then :D

if 6 months still counts as new, then I love my new horse too...!

I did! I was promised a quiet hack....the horses thought otherwise ;) I'm now going to rent him out as a babysitter for the loons - him and T can start their own business :)

Good luck with the DR in spring, and the rest of it! Plenty of updates will be needed of course ;)

I really enjoyed reading this thread . If only I was feeling the same about my new and first ever horse a 12 year old.

Lost my nerves already :(

Lovely to read all the good stories though :)

Twiglet, I was just thinking about you this morning & wondering how you were getting on with him :D

I've had my new lad a couple of months now, another Irish who isn't putting a hoof wrong :D It's so nice after the problems I had with Clover, and also when I first got my now veteran to have a nice, easy, kind, gentle, honest horse with talent :D :D

Lovely to hear similar good news stories :) Ideal, really hope things turn round with your new one :(

Today I boxed him over to a friends to hack with her two dressage horses....again, the naughtiest of behaviour from the hyped up warmbloods

Silly phone posted too quickly!!

Basically Buzz was a star - babysitting older and more established horses, opening all the gates, letting me hop off and on again to sort out boots and things....whilst still being forward and very fun (his trot still leaves me gobsmacked :D )

I too love my new horse , he came at the end of August . I had admired him for ages but never thought I would buy him. I was looking for a 7/8 yo warmblood and he's a5 yo TB but I adore him and still get a thrill every time I see him looking over the door.
nothing beats the feeling when it's going well !!! Good job because it makes up for when it's not going so good.

Great post - glad things are going so well. We have just started the horse hunt today. I think its going to be a long one as our previous horse was a super star, from the minute she stepped off the box - how is anyother horse expected to follow that!

I am looking forwards to lots of lovely self indulgent posts from you about your progress
