I am picking up my 8 week old boston terrier next weekend. I am out in the mornings for a few hours and the same in the afternoons so will be leaving the puppy in her crate when I'm not there until she's house trained. Can I leave her with toys/chews-on all the packaging it says never leave unattended with toys/chews but I wonder what you guys do?

Thanks

I guess not then.

I should have said I know people that leave they're grown dogs with chews but wonder what you guys think about puppies? I'm pretty sure the toy/chew manufacturer say this to cover their backs as with everything nowadays! I just think she will get very bored with nothing to play with.

I think it depends on what kind of toy it is. If it is big and chewy - like a kong - then it's possibly ok. However, I'd never leave feed chews in with a little one.

She may well get bored - however, puppies sleep an awful lot. However, if you are seriously worried about her being bored - don't get one until you can be at home with it more.

I'm not a fan of rawhide chews at all, for puppies or adults, so would never give them unsupervised. If you want to leave your pup with something a Kong stuffed with treats is good, or a nylabone. I have found them to be pretty indestructable.

I always left my pup with a selection of toys while I was out, if they're soft toys then I can't see a problem (I've never left her with chews).

I don't see it fair to leave a dog in a tiny cage for hours at a time, but I guess it's down to personal choice.

I wouldnt leave rawhide with an unattended pup (hate the things anyway).

Perhaps leave one toy - you should keep the ohter toys only for when you are around to play with the pup!

Also toilet training will take much longer if you arent around to frequently let the pup out for wee breaks in the garden.

Can you get a pup sitter or someone to help you out til pups bladder is stronger and s/he can hold it for longer?

Chimo was always left with a toy or 2 when she was little, (and still is now) only things i knew she could not destory. I imagine your puppy would not be nearly as destructive as ours so you should be fine.

Now she gets a kong and a ball with treats in and she is fine.

Toilet training was a bit harder as we worked but came home at lunc and the neighbour let her out in the afternoons, but there were no more accidents during the day than in the morning from overnight.

Chimo was not crate trained as she howled the place down when in it!!

My dogs are left with kongs, nylabones and other hard rubber toys during the day and have been since they were puppies. They also have a (disgusting) selection of "roasted long bones" from the pet shop. I would never leave them with soft toys (they are chewers), rawhide chews, pigs ears etc nor with any toys/bones where bits can come off.

I never leave mine with anything other than large non-swallowable non-destructable kongs etc, or their fluffy bunnies which are always available for the odd mad lurcher moment

I gave all the dogs a tripe stick the other day and a few minutes later heard Indie retching and she had tried to swallow it longways and got it lodged in her throat. I had to dive in and pull it out but if I hadn't been there she would have choked

Likewise a rawhide chew would have had the same effect so no, I'd never leave any dog with any sort of food other than a large bone maybe, but I wouldn't do that either. It's not worth the risk.

try a kong stuffed with dog biscuits and cheeze from one of them squeezy tubes if you know what i mean. It never caused our puppy any problems.
