Luna was ridden in a mullen mouth straight bar when I started riding her which she seems happy enough in but we can't do a dressage test in it and I'm aiming for a W & T test soon-ish. I swapped it for a full cheek french link and although she's salivating lots she's really not happy and throwing her head about. I'm not sure what to try next.....not actually got anything I can try left so will have to buy

Would you try a mullen mouth french link or a metal straight bar? or even a single joint?

I thought if it was a different material inside to the rings you couldn't use it for a test? Then again I'm not that clued up with stressage

If I can use the bit she likes then that's even better.

I am not at all clued up on dressage. A straight bar works on the bars of the mouth rather than the corners and if that works for your horse stick with it. They are all different and what works for one might be pants for another. There must be a straight bar that you can use for dressage, in fact I am sure someone on here will enlighten you. Good luck xx

Check what rules the test is being run under as you may get away with it. If not then get an all metal version of your current bit as agree that if it works stick with it. Adding a joint, link or straightening the mouthpiece will all have a different action to the current bit, hence the horse may go differently and not always better!

A mullen mouth is a slightly curved unjointed mouthpiece, and can be metal, rubber or plastic (ie happy mouth), it is dressage legal as long as the mouthpiece is made entirely of the same thing, doesn't matter if the rings are different.
