the as yet un-named stray terrier!!!!!

No owner has come forward despite radio ads and newspaper ads plus all of the previous leg work the lady who found him in ringing vets etc so he is coming to live with me! I picked him up an hour ago and he is currently lying beside me fast asleep and snoring so I don't think the move has stressed him lol! He is house-trained and the lady who found him said he loved her dogs crate which is brilliant!
I have booked him in to the vets later for a full health check, to get a microchip and start his vaccinations as we have no idea what previous care he had. He needs to be neutered aswell but vets has advised to let him settle in with me for a few weeks first. I am so excited and thrilled to have a doggy friend again. I did feel a bit tearful earlier remembering about the day I picked Boots up but I suppose that is natural. Current possible names are Rory, Basil, Rupert or Barney so all suggestions are gratefully received!!

Awww I have just got a rescue dog from a shelter. Spent the morning in the vets explaining his breed to the receptionist :D

Shelters wouldn't consider rehoming to me as I have no garden even though any dog i ever have has the full run of OH's farm every day and travel around with me while I work! Then a friend of a friend found this little fella and after 10 days of intensive searching for his owner nobody came forward so he is now mine:-0

Im liking Barney!! But also like

Rufus
Ted

For when his terrier side comes out!! :)

Thanks guys i'm thrilled with him...OH thinks i've lost the plot waffling on about yay I am going to have to hoover again!!

Lovely lad! Any idea on age?

Why do you want to neuter? I'd wait and see if he knows what his bits are for. There are pros and cons on this issue.

Approx 18 months. i am neuturing him as while he is handsome and a lovely model of a terrier I have no idea who or what his parents are and there could be genetic health issues that I am unaware of. Also minus his crown jewels he will be less attractive to travellers so there will be less risk of him being stolen!

CT I know you are reading up a lot on this issue and have concerns about neutering but tonnes of have neutered dogs with no problems whatsoever.

If you are aware of the complete shitstorm being created by overbreeding and overpopulation of dogs in Ireland, you will understand why Amage wants to get Rory's bits off.
You can't watch them all the time, in every case.

My male would probably still be having UTIs every month and be heaps more over-protective/aggressive had he not had his bits off and I nearly lost the best bitch I ever had because we thought it was OK to keep her open once her (disastrous) breeding days were over.

How cute is Rory, and extremely lucky:) I'm with the neutering party, cute though he is there are already far too many dogs in this country. You are doing the right thing, all of my dogs have been neutered to no ill-effect. I think he will have a lovely life now, my only advice would be - don't let him on the sofa unless you want to sit on the floor yourself!

I think you are absolutely right to have him castrated amage. Apologies for repeating myself, but if my much missed Saffie had been spayed she would have been celebrating her 13th birthday next week.:(

too late!!!! as he is a bit nervous i didn't want to upset him by putting him off sofa when he made the first move to come for a cuddle....i now think the nervousness is all an act as currently I'm curled up in one corner of three seater sofa while he sprawls across the rest!! ho hum

Thank you he will most definitely be done. We will give him a few weeks to settle in with me before doing him so he has 6 weeks max left to enjoy his hormones!!

Another vote for off with his 'nads - cracking little dog you got there. Shelters wouldn't rehome to me with my unfenced garden - or over Xmas when the place is dead quiet and I'm at home for three weeks.

One private rescue did, however, and one little JRT is curently having the time of her life. I know exactly how you feel about having a dog around again. It's wonderful!

Mine was also spayed and chipped by the rescue. Another thing less to worry about :)

O he is cute!!:D:D:D

Sounds like he has settled in well - first the sofa next the bed!!:D:D:D

I can't believe you fell for the 'I'm nervous....' act - you sucker!!:p:D:D:D

As for having his nuts off - yes definitely especially as terrierists will bugger off after rabbits/badgers etc etc no need in encouraging the urge:)

Def will not be on the bed...OH would have a canary! I also can't believe I fell for the nervous act. One thing he is genuinely petrified of is going down stairs...he shakes and cries so have been carrying him down but even then he is very nervous. He will have to learn to use them as my house is upside down with bedrooms downstairs and living room/kitchen upstairs. As for rabbits etc....the local huntsman is quite in love with him and wants to get him working lol

Oh I love the look of him - I'd defo take him in.

Re the issue of names, its something that keeps me up at night when I dread my boys getting stolen and someone calling them something different and them just not understanding (yes i lie awake at night pondering these things:o).

Mine are called Pip and Dodger. If I call one by the other's name they just don't get it. But if I yell Skip, then Pip will come, and if I yell Podge, then Dodge will come. Its all about the basic sound. So you could try calling him several different 'sounds' until he responds to one in particular and then go from there. Ok, just read that back and I sound anal and mad. In which case I'd call him Reg cos I like it!

Good luck with him, he's gorgeous, and very lucky to find you. x

Aw thank you i am very touched by all the good luck messages and pms. He has been officially christened Rory on account of Rory McIlroy's amazing golf this week and he is starting to respond to my voice so saying his name loads to help him twig it! He has his first day at work tomorrow starting his new career as my assistant;-)
