can i put a falabella in with a cob?

My daughter has a 12 year old lovely natured cob who needs a companion ,can i get him a falabella?

You'd be better off with a Shetland or mini as Falabellas are a bit pricey just for a companion. But as long as they get on I can't see a problem.
 
shetlands a are stockier and more likely to be able to take a kick if the horses were to have a fight at all. A falabella would break easily lol
 
Actually i told a small fib, i have already bought one but how would you suggest i introduce them ?Do i put the cob in his stable when the other one arrives?

if your just going to by a fallabella for a companion i wouldnt bother as someone said..they are quite pricey....i would go for more of a sturdy shettie or a section A....or jusr generally an aged opony that needs a good home....fallabelas tend to be little delicate things and can have quite a temper lol, cn be quite acward.........
 
Yes that's probably a good idea. I bought the Falabela for a bargain price because i have an idyllic home for horses and my daughter loves them to bits ,The person selling him could see this (i didn't even know they had a Falabella i had gone to view a shetland) but i have wanted one for ages so i think it was fate lol

Lucky you!! I would put them out in separate fields where they can sniff each other and have a squeal, keep an eye on them for an hour or two. When you put them together will depend on how fast they settle down. My haffie bonded with the other two within 24 hours and they are all best mates now

Section a piece off in the corner with one strand of electric tape but don't connect it up then the little one can get out of the way if needed.
 
i use to put my falabella in with my nfxwelsh d and she use to put him in his place lol it was great to watch,they were great friends,i use to show her alot as well and she use to win over the big ones much to thier disgust lol !!!
 
If I put a falabella in with my cob, I would expect to find him wearing a small furry boot. He is a bit careless about where he puts his feet and doesn't hesitate to push a smaller horse around.

I would introduce them across a good sturdy fence, not letting them in together until they are clearly friendly.
 
LOL if you put a Falabella in the field with my cob, she would jump out the field!!!! She is terrified of anything equine smaller than about 10hh!!!

I have a Fallabela and he goes out with the horses with no problems. I have always treated him like a normal horse, so introduce him to the others slowly, kept in separate paddocks for a couple of weeks, let them smell each other, etc., if all goes well allow them to meet. Giving him the chance to 'escape' under one strand of electric tape is a good idea (unless he learns to ignore the electric!), but I would not put him in a stable with another horse until you know they are very firm friends as he will have nowhere to go if things go wrong.
 
i have a fabulous companion type for sale...

he wont get much bigger than 11.2..

AND the bonus is.......he's NOT a Shi1tland!!!

I knew a falabella who was turned out with a field full of all sorts! Her best friend was the biggest horse in the field- a big 17hh Clydesdale X... she would go and stir up trouble with the other ponies and then run away to hide by standing right underneath her big friend, very entertaining

Same as every other horse then! I dont get why people have such a problem with shetlands - any breed of horse can have good ones and bad ones.
 
I've got a Shetland, have had her for 16 years, I've also shown her at Shetland shows and have a friend who breeds Shetlands. So, I think I'm qualified to ask, what's wrong with Shetlands?

PS, in the time I have had my shetland I have also had a section A, a section C, an Arab and a welsh x who were little sh1ts!
 
Well Thankyou ,for all your advice it really helped.For all your Information : Our Falabella arrived today and we have split the paddock into two as you all suggested. They have sniffed noses and are running up the length of the fence together so i'm sure they will be friends.Tomorrow i may try them in the same paddock.Once again thankyou all for your invaluable advice!
