hi !
i have a 14hh cob and i have had him for a year and a half now and he has never been stabled over night before
We are looking for a new livery and in our area (chesterfield derbyshire) it is extremely hard to find 24/7 all year round turn out so it looks like we have got to go down the route of stabling him at night, and sometimes in the day if the flooding continues any longer.

Do u think it would work ?
how would we keep him occupied all night ?
how long will we have to ride him to make sure he is not fizzy ?
have you heard of any DIY/part liveries in the chesterfield/matlock area ?

Thanks

Hi!

Has he ever been stabled overnight before you got him? Does he come into a stable during the day at all now - even if just to be tacked up, groomed etc? I would build up slowly with stable time now if you can and see how he is. I assume he will be on a yard where others will be in also - this should be a big help to him if you are worried he will be stressed.

Keep him occupied with two or three haynets hung on different sides of his stable. Hang a swede on a rope. Put carrots around the floor for him. Will he be able to see other horses - that will help. He will be fine .

When I first got my girl she'd hardly ever been in a stable, and when she came to me she had to stay in for her first day and night, and as it was winter she had to come in at night after her first day, so as you can imagine, I was quite worried.

She was very stressed at first because she arrived in the morning, but as soon as the horses started to come in for the night (around 2pm) she began to calm down, and by the time it got dark she was quite settled.

She seemed to prefer being out, but she had two periods of box rest last summer, as well as afternoons in during the hot spell, and now she's happy as Larry in the stable. In fact I've started leaving her in most days while there's no grass.

Hi !
Apparently he has been in on box rest for a few days but because he was from a riding school he was turned out most of the time.
People say that he likes being stabled but he has never been in over night apart from that once
When we bring him in to be tacked and groomed he is very good and thats when he just has a licket
He would never come in on his own always with other horses around
thank you
Meg

If you are new to the area go to tack shops and look on notice boards. There are loads of diy yards in the Chesterfield area, dependibg where you are planing to move. PM me with where you are moving to and I may be able to point you in the right direction.

Try looking grassmore / claycross areas, there are yards Alton area which have alot of turn i would suggest you have a drive round and ask questions. The new tack shop at Kelstedge may have adverts for that area.
