We've just bought a 4yo pony - quite obviously a Highland, dun coloured with a dorsal stripe, 'tiger stripes' to legs - weathering in his mane....the lot.
He has a bog-standard passport ganecy passport and is not registered as a Highland pony.

Is it possible to register him with a breed society or whatever without knowing his parents? I think he came straight off the mountain as a job lot, but he has no freezemark or brand or anything...

Not bothered if I cant, just wondering really...

not sure. I know the fjord pony society does a "true to type" register for ones that are og unknown breeding. try the society

Don't think so!
I have just bought a 6 yr old quite clearly pure sec a. WPCS were very nice but said without both parents no chance and even with only one he could only be a part bred.
As all I have is a date of birth they cant trace him either. I'm just hoping that previous owner will eventually answer my email!!

I bought my sec A 7 years ago knowing he was registered but his passport got lost along the way.
I traced his breeders in Wales and they were lovely and were happy to help me, they told me his parents names and wrote a letter for me to give to the WPCS and then I could get a duplicate passport.

Different breed etc and I don't know all the info as I got the horse half way through the process.

But my TB was brought by previous owner from Ireland. No passport (back in the day

) and she bred from her, weatherbys blood tested her and from her DNA found out who she was etc. (very clever really

) Unfortunatly I have no more info than that. But if Weatherbys blood test others may, I'm not sure however who pays and it was not a quick process, I brought the mare when foal was about 8/9months and the process began before this, I eventually got the results about 6 months later.

did they find out who her parents were, or was she registered with them? Just curious as I have just had my TB done, and he isnt registered with them, so I'm assuming its not possible to get DNA match to parents

Well... I'm not entirely sure about that question.

I really don't know. As I hadn't started off the search and it was only done as previous owner wanted to register foal, I never found out the true ins and outs only that she got a much better show name!

Sorry I'm sounding like a real bint (I'm really not all the time!)

Go on the hpec board or highland pony talk - 9/10 highland ponies are known and can be traced and may even have papers somewhere. If its a true hipo its very likely to be not only registered but also recognisable by someone.
