my daughter has her first ever leadrein jumping class on sunday and im more nervous than she is shes only 4 and her steady steed is 19 i know he will look after her but am still a wreck. how big are the jumps are they just raised trotting poles? what should i be wearing to lead her in? my daughters wearing a black jacket and blue tie to match her hat thanks

Few pointers:
Don't wear pointy toed ariat cowboy boots as the toes get caught on the jumps and you fall over
Have a long lead rope as it is easier to jump a foot or two away from the pony - particularly if they dish - as you get kicked as you are jumping

The jumps are tiny - less than one foot usually - the ponies trot over them quite easily.

You can wear what you like - nobody seems to care at all!

Body protector for your child though if you have one. More important than a jacket and tie.

Haven't got any pics, but don't forget if any one jump looks a bit big (over 6 inches!!!) just go around it. Yes you'll be eliminated, but the child will have alot of fun and not be scared by doing a "big" bouncy jump! In my experience for this type of class show organisers will let you carry on if you talk to them.

Just wait until they want to lead rein XC - get your trainers on!!!! Been there - jumped 2ft courses with lead rein - spreads on an artificial surface not much fun!

The size of the course will usually be in the schedule.

I do have pictures somewhere.
Like everyone else has said, it doesn't matter what you wear, what happens, just as long as everyone has fun! My daughter is now 6 and is desperate to jump off the lead rein, however - I would have a heart attack just watching if she tried, so I still am doing the running thing - yet to go across country mind - dreading that!!

Just dont do what my dad did to me as a kid.....he got so carried away thinking it was highly competitive....he was so chuffed when he got to the end and then looked round to realise he had lost me about halfway round!! Mum wasnt best impressed!!!

Im pretty sure you can wear anything to lead. I would have a practice running around on grass to see which of your footwear has the best grip, some shoes surprise you at how slippy they actually can be on grass!

Beware of loafers flying off in the jump off! You'll have to carry on barefoot!

Sensible shoes are a good idea, or boots.

My 6 yr old son has been doing lead rein jumping for the past 2 seasons at the local show. Last year he had to be held on, as pony is a 'proper' jumper and refuses just to walk over a pole!

This year he seems much more stable and has won the class at his first 2 show.

My tip for the runner.....get Dad to do it:D;) I have a problem with my knee and lungs, and Dad used to run at county level. no contest is there? Dad runs in whatever boots he has on at the time, last year Army Issue, this year Aquacats:)

Good luck and have fun.

*is so glad daughter is off lead rein now and I don't have to do this anymore*

I've never been to a comp where they are bigger than about a foot, usually just cross poles (make sure you jump the higher bit so the pony is in the middle if the pony does actually "jump") and you can wear what you want. Oxygen may be needed at the end.

Tip for if if you ever do any XC - get some friends and place them strategically around the course (prefereably at the bottom of a big hill so you don't have to run up it) to take over from you.

Lol.....its like the parents race at a kids school sports day....they get sooooo competitive! He would literally run flat out....ponio going like the clappers....me hanging on for dear life....mum standing there denying all knowledge of knowing him let alone being married to him! And that was just in the clear round....i think people failed to tell him that it wasnt timed!

we wont mention the time (another show...another embarrasment) that ponio stopped to spook at a flower pot....dad kept going and fell over the jump when ponio jerked him to a halt with him in mid air over the jump....i kept going forwards and jumped the jump without ponio landing on the other side in a crumpled heap next to my dad with ponio then deciding that the flower pots in fact were not at all scary and the plant were in fact quite tasty!.......i think mum went home at this point to avoid any further embarrasment that day!!!!

Your parents are funny!!! :D

Skychick - sounds like all the parents at our local show when they get going in the gymkhana. They run hell for leather, ponies going berserk left right and centre, bucking, kids bouncing - its chaos!

QR, & not directed at the OP, just a general comment/observation.
Lead rein jumping. One of my biggest pet hates. Riding is about progression. If the child hasn't developed a secure enough seat to stop/steer & sit a jump unassisted then they shouldn't be doing it. It's just another reflection of the 'want it now' society that todays children are part of.
I hope whoever has organised it has carried out a full & comprehensive risk assessment, because if (heaven forbid) there is any kind of accident they'll struggle to explain themselves.

Oh Zebedee - come on! Lead rein jumping has been going on forever - its not a new thing!

The most important part of kids on ponies is having fun - thats what its all about. Exactly the same with Gymkhana Games - brilliant fun for everyone :) Are you against those too?

When my kids were little I used to lead them out hunting all the time - should I have stopped them going because they hadn't progressed enough to go hunting?

Haven't got any pics I'm afraid but do have not so fond memories of doing this when children were much younger. The course always seems longer and the jumps bigger when its you running round and jumping, especially when child is more competent and is urging you to run faster too!
Remember one Pony Club show when delightful child questioned whether me and pony would fit through narrow stile type jump, think child was jumping on own soon after that comment!

I just loathe seeing ponies doing as they have been taught - ie jumping, only to be socked in the mouth either by the child in a desperate attempt to regain their precarious grasp of balance, or by the leader, who as well as trying to control the pony is having to grab the child.
I didn't do lead rein jumping when I was a child. I learnt at a BHS approved stables & we didn't start jumping until we could canter securely, although trotting poles were introduced once we could rise to the trot & steer.

How very sedate. I hardly think that every tiny child socks its pony in the mouth at every jump. You seem to think that all lead rein children and parents treat the pony as a mere tool without any thought or compassion - personally I think the converse is true.

my daughter can trot and canter and shes been practicing her socks off for past month over little jumps which she can do on her own its just me that wont let her off leadrein at show yet, so i think shes ready for it. we are doing veteran class too in hand its all thanks to her super safe boy that shes doing it bless him

Not every child no. Some are very competent, & hardly need the added security of a lead rein. Some aren't 'riding' at all, merely balancing as best they can on the back on the pony looking as if they're about to be violently ill as the parent / leader urges them to 'hold on tight'.
