Hi all

I have about 25 chickens at the moment, after our cockerel went on a humping frenzy. We've always thought we'd have a few extra chickens, with the intention of eating them... and now we've got 7 cockerels we need to get rid of a few...

however, i'm not entirely sure i want my husband to kill/pluck them etc. not because i'm excessively fluffy (i'm not) but because he is rather messy... and i think he'd leave guts/feathers everywhere.... which would result in me being very annoyed.

can we box up live chickens and take them to the butcher?

apologies to any vegetarians... if it's any consolation they are happy and free range. but if they stay together much longer they'll stop being so happy...

alternatively, if anyone wants about 5 cockerels... PM me!

i know we have people in our area that will dispatch, pluck and clean bird for about £8 a bird. i would ask at your local feed store they will probably know of someone

hehe we had 8 cockerals! we live in a villiage in the country side next to a farm and the neighbours still complained!!! we had an experienced friend who dont them for us, they didnt taste too good though as they previously had to run of the garden (1/2 acre) so where tough as old boots!!!
We currently have 7 young chicks, hoping they wont be too many cockerals

oh no... ours have the run of 2 acres. but are still fairly young (august 09).

i'll ask around locally... there is a farmer opposite. but i'm trying to convince him i'm not a towny... perhaps i shouldn't ask him...

If they are older than a year, or even 6 months, don't try roasting them, you might as well eat your boots!

They should make good casserole and curries though. Try a game dealer, or ask a gamekeeper who processes their pheasants.

We have a local 'countryman' - as near as you can get to on the edge of town anyway - and he comes and despatched the birds for us. Have to say he does it so swiftly and silently that even a spectator doesn't see it! Last time he culled 'Ginger' who was a 2 year old RIR - massive thug of a bird who attacked your boots if you went in the pen, and daughter had a riding lesson with instructor adjacent to the pen. She saw Trevor arrive, and assumed he'd not taken Ginger as she'd not heard/seen a peep.

Usually we ask Trevor to cull 2 or 3 youngsters and he retuns one plucked ready for the oven - but even at 6 months tough as old boots and quite a game-y flavour, it's all too easy to get used to bland 'shop' chicken. Defintely better casseroled than roasted.

ask your local butcher - where abouts in lincs are you? My dad is a butcher, and may be able to recommend someone local to you.

Although dont ask them this side of xmas!
