during my neverending search for a lovely little lorry, i have found 'the one'.

sadly it's out of budget.

but... part of my budgeting included putting some money to one side for doing my C1 test.

i have since found out i can drive the lorry on a provisional with someone in there with me... so... i was wondering if i can take the test in my own lorry? then i could practice in it, and avoid having tonnes of lessons.
i've already passed a variety of 'advanced' driving tests, and been told by an examiner i was the best (female) driver he'd ever tested... so, if i could have only one lesson and the test i could potentially get 'the' lorry...

am i allowed to take test in my own lorry?
has anyone passed the test without £1000 worth of lessons?
does anyone know how much just the test costs?

oh, and where have the SweetFA threads gone to?

a million questions for y'all on a monday morning

thank you! xxx

I can't remember how much just the test costs (I think around £100) but yes you can take your LGV (7.5T) test in your own lorry. If you are doing a HGV test then it has to have the split gearbox. As far as I know anyway.

Ring the DVLA (good luck...! *looks for suitable smiley*). Also, try calling the instructors, see what they say - afterall, you will be having a lesson with someone, so they should be keen to help you

Hi there,

I have just taken my C1 test so hopefully I can give you some advice.

Firstly, if you have your medical and get your provisional licence then you can drive your own lorry with someone else in the cab as long as they who passed their car test before 1997 which allows them to drive up to 7.5 tonnes. Your provisional licence will last for two years. Just make sure you tell your insurance company that you will be driving your wagon on a provisional licence!

Secondly, I was told that if I wanted to use my lorry for lessons and for the test it would have to comply with certain conditions. One of the conditions was that it had to have ABS braking - which my lorry doesnt have so that's as far as I got on the conditions of use. Dont know if there are any more conditions.

As for the lessons, I would definitely recommend that you take some! I was quite confident driving my wagon after having driven it for nearly 2 years on a provisional license but definitely wouldnt have passed if I hadnt taken lessons. I picked up loads of tips and dropped loads of bad habits gained through years of driving a car which can only be a good thing when you have precious cargo in the back!

I took 2.5 days of one on one lessons and took the test in the afternoon of the third day. My lessons and test cost £850.

You could always buy the lorry and drive it on a provisional licence for a couple of years while you save up the extra for lessons?

I have the 2008 theory test book (apparently they have changed a few questions for the 2009 edition) and hazard perception test DVD if you would like to buy them at cut price cost?

You can take any of the tests in your own vehicle. It had better be in good condition though, as the examiner might refuse to ride in a lot of horse boxes!!

There is no requirement on gearbox type, as long as it is in the class you are being tested for ,it is OK. Also you dont need a professional instructor, anyone who has passed the test for that vehicle (or higher test) can sit with you while you drive. Oh and please get a mechanic to look at this truck before you buy it.
