hello guys,
new to this.. was just wondering if anyone tows with a rav4 2008 model, which says it can tow 2000kg. I have worked out the weight of my trailer is 655 an old rice lightweight and my horse approx 500 to 600kg along with 2 passengers approx 100kg and tack approx 50kg. As this works out to 1300 to 1400kg this seems fine to me, but have noticed lots of people saying they would never tow with a RAV4.

No problem. The 2000kg towing capacity is for the trailer and horse only (and anything else you might carry in/on the trailer). You don't need to include vehicle occupants, although if you had a car load of heavy people it might make your car struggle a bit. If you're sure about the trailer weight I think you have plenty of spare capacity. I have a Hyundai Santa Fe automatic with 2000kg towing capacity and I have a trailer weight of 900kg, plus two ponies weighing about 750 between them, so you should definitely be fine. I know the old style RAV4 only had 1500kg towing capacity so perhaps that's where the idea comes from that they're not up to it.

Sounds ok just make sure the trailer brakes are in good order and you have the right licence IE took test before 1997 or extra test for trailers if after that .....

We tow with the older rav model. Trailers 650kg and pony is 450kg avg so we have weight left. It manages perfectly in all hills and terrain :)
