Can I use a jump saddle for all purpose?

I am buying a new saddle hut can only afford 1. I enjoy hacking, schooling low level dressage and jumping. I tried 3 saddles that my saddle fitter advised and of the 3, I am thinking of a Bates Caprilli CC jump. Would this be suitable for all these disciplines.

If the saddle fits your horse, and you feel comfortable and secure in it, then yes. I think you'd struggle most with dressage, but for hacking and general schooling you'll be fine. A lot of it is personal preference as to what you like. I don't think the Caprilli is mega forward cut anyway so I wouldn't have thought you'd have problems.

Daughter won a Riding club area Novice test championship in a bright orange jumping saddle on a 1.30 tb showjumper. I like to hack in a jumping saddle, knee/thigh rolls keep everything stable.

Yes you can but would an event saddle suit you better? It is not as forward cut as a jump. I used mine for everything fir the first few years.

Pertinant as I have just bought two saddles, a dressage and jump saddle. I have been using the dressage for flat work & hacking and love it, feel very secure, love the fact that I'm not wobbling about as much as in my GP.

Yesterday I tried the jump saddle in the school, just for flatwork and had a major spook (not unusual for my mare) and boy did I miss the dressage saddle! Stayed on but a definite difference, my dressage saddle has a thigh block that keeps my leg from coming up, the flatter seat and lack of blocks meant I definitely wobbled!

But would I use the jump saddle if only had one ? Of course, I wouldn't stop riding would I ?

I have an Equipe Expression which is a jump saddle and happily school, do dressage and hack in it?

I also have an Equipe Expression and did everything in it quite merrily for the past few years. I love it. It was suggested that it’s an ‘event’ saddle which is a nice way to put it, because you can do all 3 phases in it if you wish.

You will struggle to do dressage in a jump saddle.

Not as much as you'd struggle to jump in a dressage, for most people.

Event saddles are really just GPs or VSDs, unless they're a jump saddle for XC, the odd one is but they will have a flatter seat and more forwards flap in most cases even than a jump.

Everyone's different, every jump saddle is different. It depends on a million things and the fitter who's seen you ride in it, and your trainer, are best placed to advise. I would make sure your trainer can see you ride in it before you commit. The biggest issue can be stirrup bar placement, jump saddles can be the worst for sitting you way behind your feet as the stirrup bars are shorter than on GPs, using a spacer on the stirrup bars to set the stirrup leathers back 1cm can be helpful.

I have a jump and a dressage, I tend to ride mainly in my Jump even on the flat, I feel more secure in it. If I start to do higher level dressage I will likely used my dressage saddle more, but I am talking Elementary upwards.

if I could only have one saddle it would be my jump. Much better to hack, sit a buck in than in my dressage

I wouldn’t get a really forward cut jump saddle for all purposes , a GP or a fairly straight jump might be better.
I've only ever had GP Saddles and do a bit of everything in them.

Yes will be fine. I'd say that you will only struggle with sitting trot in a jump saddle and you don't need that for low level dressage or general schooling and in fact it would likely be counterproductive at that level so shouldn't be a problem.

Yes, I had this saddle. I was fine at BE80. To be honest it wasn't dressage that I found the issue, it wasn't forward cut enough to get my stirrups short enough for jumping.
It was a really comfortable saddle and great for long rides.

This is what I did. I could only afford one saddle for a while so bought a jump saddle first that wasn‘t too extreme (not big blocks) so I could still ride longer in it.
With a previous horse I did it the other way round and bought the dressage saddle first. Sbloom is right, its more difficult to jump in a dressage saddle than it is to dressage in a jump saddle.

I have a K2 jumping saddle on my cob type - it fits him and me really well. We've ridden in it for 2 years without leaving the floor (just recently started jumping x poles)
I have dressaged up to novice no problem at all and schooled more complex moves. If it fits and it is comfortable it's a winner !

You'll be fine in a jumping saddle.
I evented to Novice and dressaged to Elementary in a very forward cut Pessoa with no problems

If I could only have one saddle it would be a 'proper' jumping one.
I cannot abide GP, eventer or VSD saddles... horrid things!

My Albion dressage saddle is the only saddle I hack in. It’s saved my life many times. Spooky pheasants ?

Absolutely it will. I have a young mare who events, dressages and SJs. I have bought a jump saddle for her and will invest in a dressage saddle when money allows! We do BD in my jump saddle with no problems.
