Hello. Dim showing question. Never done any showing but I have a new loan pony who is Welsh X. Can he be shown in in-hand M+M classes at fun shows ? Nothing serious and they aren't big enough to have part bred classes. If so how should he be turned out and what should I wear ?

Sometimes local show schedules state that M & M classes are for pure and part-breds. It would depend on what the schedule says, but if it doesn't say "pure bred only" or isn't a qualifier for anything or for registered ponies only .. then go for it!

You should wear a tweed jacket. Pony should shown natural (ie not plaited). No boots, coloured numnahs, martingales or coloured browbands

Have fun !

Edit: Sorry, just read it's in-hand - you should wear tweed jacket and either cream jods or pale trousers. Pony should be in either normal bridle (no coloured browband) or an in-hand bridle

Thank you ! It's just a bit of fun for us both. He is a lead rein/companion pony but is bored so I am doing some in hand work with him and I thought it might be nice to go on an outing ! He has white ( well green actually at the moment but hoping can get them clean ) legs so would dark trousers be ok ?

Yes but it one of my pet hates...... Turns into everyone has a m&m and you end up with everything in there against a nice m&m.

Thanks for posting this thread op. been wondering exactly the same for my welsh x. Looks just like a stocky welsh so might have got away with entering classes locally except he is 16 hands!

Id be mighty pee'd off if there was a partbred in a M&M class i was in. I would assume unless it states you can enter a partbred that it is purebred only. I would also think if you are showing a partbred it should be shown as such as well (pulled & plaited).
Are there no other classes you can enter? There are usually PB classes at my local shows & also you could do Condition & Turnout inhand as well.

The only way to know for sure is to ask the secretry.
If is doent state it on the schedule then ask.

I can see both side of the arguement so ask who is in charge to know for sure!

Last M&m local class I entered my highland in had several coloured cobs a couple of hafflingers a friesian and one or two welsh part breds plaited up the winner was a lovely fell stallion mine was second and a rather strange looking new forest was third so at least the judge knew what a british native looked like So in answer to your question yes you can at local level as long as they dont have to be registered with their breed society to enter

On a side note - I judged a part bred arab class a few years ago and when I queried the very nice section c (which I had also judged in the large M&M class)being there the rider told me that all welshs were pb arab because of the Arab stallions that had been turned out on the mountains many generations ago :D. Had to laugh.

When I judge a M&M class I expect pure breds and probably wouldn't place a part bred unless the schedule specifically states that the class is for both. As a Welsh cross though there are often Welsh only classes that do include part breds at least in this area.

PS for Highland owners a little bit of tartan in your showing outfit gives divvy judges a clue...or wear your HPS badge! Saves being told that 'that's a chunky Connie isn't it?'

Or as one PUK judge stated that is very poor example of a welsh section B a 13.2 county winning highland pony go figure
Kid leadings comment "that would be because it is a highland then"
She has nearly 9 inches of bone now that would be some section B

Gosh. Didn't realize it was so contentious ! Apologies to those who hold strong views - but really why am asking - I haven't a clue and don't want to upset anyone. Actually the lady running the show is quite happy for him to enter but wanted to check out if it was the done thing. To be fair he would never beat a nice pure bred anyway even if he is my superstar but I probably won't enter him. For condition and turnout can I show him with a running/Arab Plait ? He has a very long mane which I can tidy but don't want to pull and light feathers I don't want to clip off as he lives out.

If the schedule specifies part breds then you can of course enter, though a part bred should always be shown plaited and trimmed. If he's got white legs then go for dark coloured trousers though avoid black if you can, brown or grey would be more suitable with a tweed jacket.

He must again be plaited and trimmed for a condition and turnout class.

At local level I would expect it and might avid a class like this. If taking a baby for some education it would be the last thought on my mind.... Go and enjoy!

Same here....I got told he didn't have a good enough knee action for a section D.

(the dorsal stripe, tiger stripes on legs and dun coat weren't enough of a clue)

Mine is dark mouse with eel stripe.... Poor mars honestly could not be anything else....... We did laugh! Did tell judge.... Funny that cos he is a hipo!
