..There seems to be alot more female riders yet when you go to top competitions there seems to be more men? Im saying seems because you can gladly correct me but isit like men go:
Get on a horse, oops Ill miss out the years and years of training, and Ill ride brillianty? Where are they all at the local shows and at the stable yards? :s

always confused me you get a few boys at riding schools then you go to livery yards and ther non exststant but then you go to top comps and there every where

At the lower levels of competing there are far more women than men . If by top competitions you mean Grand Prix etc then yes there are more male riders. I think that, as with many jobs, women leave to have a family & bring up the children. Men remain on the circuit & in the industry to earn a living.

I just think men are naturally better riders. I worked at a riding school for many years and they always picked it up more quickly

I can't explain why they skip a few, but i think a lot of them either have horsey families so their own yards or can afford to stay on competition yards. I'm just guessing though... only reasons i could think up!

I asked my (horsey) son this and he said that men are naturally much more competitive so don't do the messing about/hacking stuff. They either compete properly or don't bother! He did three different horse courses at Sparsholt College and was the only male on all of them.

Well. my OH is completely non-horsey but when we started going out he insisted he got into it so he could help me here and there if he wanted to. He's brilliant now, he goes up the stables to see Josie becuase I work longer horses than him. etc etc etc.

He's had 6 lessons and has already mastered rising trott. i know it might not sound like much but he really is a complete natural.

I think that men are more competitive. If they do something, they want to do it well and succeed. Women are probably more likely to do it for fun and so are happier at whatever level they are at. Women may also have the disadvantage that they have to take some years out for children, and so never quite catch up with the men.

Just my opinion, but I have often wondered about this myself.

I'd broadly agree with this. I have noticed that a high proportion of women who ride do so because they love horses; they love to just ride them and be around them - even those who compete at a high level usually started because they were drawn to horses. Men who ride are more likely to see it as a competitive sport from the start and I did notice in Pony Club that the only boys who continued riding in their teens were those who were fairly able and had a chance of competing successfully. Those who weren't so able tended to drop it. With the girls, they continued as long as they enjoyed the riding in general.
