I have always been rubbish at this and always wanted to learn- so wondered if you could age my horse and explain how you did it from these pictures :)

She's got the dentist in a couple of weeks so was going to ask him but I'm a bit too impatient :p and since I just found these pictures thought I might as well post on here and then I can refer to it when I want :)

Thanks!

I'm no expert, but due to the hook (evident in first photo) and the fact that the teeth don't appear to be 'angled', then I guess that the horse in question is 7/8 years old. She also has 'cups' - poky out bits in the middle of the tooth, (picture slightly in 2 but mainly seen in 3) - these tend to go by the time horse is 10/11.

Am perfectly happy to be told otherwise though!!

I was going to say 7 but wasn't going to say until someone else did for fear of looking a fool .... :)

I would say teens,
I'm going by length of teeth and the shape of the tables being triangular. I cant see a galvaynes grove but that may just be the pic.
Is your horse a mare? Although the lips are in the way abit I see no sign of tushes.

Yes she is a mare, thanks for the replies there has always been question over her age as she is most likely from the holland meat market.. bless her! she is 14.2hh and build like a horse cut off at the knees lol

Think I'd say 8 or 9. She's got some features of an old mouth and a young mouth all together. She's got a hook so young, but the cups to me look like they are from an older horse.

You'll have to report back what the dentist says. My pony was aged between 7 and 14 by various vets and dentists over about 2 years. Still don't know how old she is- she doesn't have many teeth left now.

On her passport she would be about 10 now- however as a 5 1/2 year old (as we bought her) she did look like and act like a 3 year old... and also happened to grow a bit! (despite having shoes taken off) I will let you know what the dentist says :)

what do you mean by a 'hook'?

what do you mean by a 'hook'?

Top picture, top tooth nearest her tongue.. the 'back bit' of the tooth that kind of curves down and forward is known at the hook.. I guess it looks like it would 'hook' onto the bottom tooth should her teeth meet.

I really hope I'm not barking mad and have got that right!!

She certainly has the hook for a 7yr old, and the angle of the teeth suggest 7yrs also (rather than my initial thoughts of 15yrs - where the angle would be much greater, more sloping and teeth longer) Interesting to see what the 'experts' say !! :D

Here is a full body confo shot- I know these don't offer much help as 20 year old horses can look younger! but better than nothing

most recent one of her- just realised how much her mane swaps sides... excuse the saddle in the floor! It is well cared for honest :P

I would guess 8/9. But could be anything from 7 to early teens. I know my mares dob to the day & have had her since two. Now 23 & the closest anyone has ever got to her correct age in all that time was still 3yrs out. Most have been further out though. And that includes dentists, vets & experienced people. And it varies from older than she is to younger, so its not just her teeth being odd.

Can't see galvaynes groove (brown line growing from top of tooth) on the tooth with the hook (known as a 7yr hook) she'd have that by 10. The hook is there but not clearly defined and would be gone by 9yr I think. The marks on the tables are consistent with a horse 7-10yr . Overall, I'm going with 8yrs old :)
