Hi all,

I feel like I should already know this but can someone tell me how you know the size of the circle you're riding in a school? For instance if you're instructor were to say "keep him on a 10 meter circle" or when you see it in a dressage test?

I've always managed to guesstimate my circles and got by but wondered if I'd missed an obvious way to tell?

If you're riding in a 40x20m arena, a 20m circle will be to X in the centre of the school ie half the arena.

A 10m circle would take you to the centre line of the arena (you could fit two circles in side by side across the short side of the arena, if you see what I mean)

One of my enthusiastic pupils got the lawn mower out and along with a stake in the centre and a measured piece of rope mowed the different sized circles in her grass so she could get the size and shape right.

If you go to http://www.dressagediagrams.org/ you can download various dressage tests with diagrams. I find these really useful, not only for practising tests, but also for helping my daughter understand the shapes she needs to ride in the school.

We don't have a school to ride in, but I have measured out a 20x40 area of the field and put cones in the corners and where the letters should be. We don't always ride in there but it's very useful to have that marked out space for practising circles and other movements.

Wicked idea :D. Like corn/crop circles for horses :D

Thanks everyone, I love these ideas! Thanks for the diagram too, that really helps. I shall go away and get practicing :) may even get the lawn mower out ;)
