I haven't had Doug vaccinated since I have had him, but need to get him done so I can take him to college with me. Would somebody be able to explain what injections he will need and when he will need them etc.

Thanks

He will need a flu jab and a tetanus

Flu jabs are normally done initially over a couple of months (I think!) - it's been a long time since I had to have vaccs done for the first time, but I think it's a course of three injections?! Then each year you just need one booster, which incorporates tetanus as well. Ring your vet and get him booked in whenever you can - there is no specific time of year you have to wait for, so do whatever suits you! Just remember he will need his booster the same month next year

Oh, and I always give Ellie a couple of days off after her jab. It isnt something you have to do, and some people shoot me down for suggesting it, but having known a couple of horses have mild reactions/side effects after a jab (rare, but can happen) I always give her a couple of days just to make sure she is feeling fully well

You don't need a tetanus every year once you are up to date with flu and tetanus. My vet does flu and tet one year and then flu and some other respiratory thing (can't remember sorry!) the next.

I seem to recall if you want to compete in certain competitions the FEI say you have to have flu every six months......

The initial course for flu vaccinations is 3 jabs; the second should be between 21 and 92 days after the first jab, and then he'll need a third jab between 150 and 215 days after the second. Your vet should write it down for you once he's had the first one.

For tetanus, he needs two jabs about a month apart, and then a booster that only needs to be done once every two years.

So basically, once the initial courses are finished he'll need a flu booster next year, then flu and tet. the year after that, then just flu and so on.

I would guess that college will want him to have his first two flu jabs before you can take him.

cost- depends on your vet!

One very simple answer to your question - pick up the telephone and speak to your local vet.

Thanks
