I think I made a bit of an error today.
I longlined my filly with the saddle on, not for the first time. All was going well, and on the spur of the moment I thought it wise to get on. I did. We walked, stopped, walked and turned left and right. Somewhere during this, she either slipped, spooked, napped (towards mare) or a combination of all three and before we knew it we were both on the ground. No injuries, no frights. I got back on after walking her forwards, she had her ears pricked and we repeated the process all well - albeit wobbly!!
Do I blame the field as it is slightly unlevel and still has 'soft ground' in places - lack of school? My riding - I may have pushed her too hard too quickly 'assuming' it was napping - pet hate! or just one of those unfortunate things that happens and luckily no damage - yet I can't help but worrying I stuffed up, on her first go!
Any suggestions on what to do next time?

Did you have a helper?

If you ended on a good note, then hopefully she will remember that. I would go back a step and get her confidence up. Then get a helper to lead her the next time that you get on so that you can make sure that it goes well and calmly.

I didn't have a helper today, but can arrange for a helper to help next time. Just may be a delay between now and then. Does that matter?

I came of my youngster 3 times (not his fault), and it was a few months before I dared to get back on. I did plenty of groundwork over winter. There was not any problems in leaving it that long.
