Can they make me stay?

I have paid my livery up to the end of the month. I am moving yards and told YO today that I would like to go at the end of the month, but she told me I have to give 4 weeks notice.
What can they do if I leave earlier than that? Can they make me stay and make me pay another 2 weeks?
 
do you have a contract?... do you wanna make your life difficult in horsey circles that your YO is in??? I would say that physically they cant make you stay but if you knew you needed to give 4 weeks notice, bit rude not to, even if it is only the monetary 4 weeks!
 
If you pay monthly, then I suspect a months notice would be required.
You could offer the other 2 weeks money on the understanding that if she fills your space before the 2 weeks is up then you could have a refund.
On the other hand if she is an old cow then tell her to stuff it

I don't think she could do anything but I would hate to leave the yard in a bad cloud.


For two reasons. 1. If you were in her shoes, needing to have that stabled filled to bring money in and one of your clients gave you hardly any notice, so you couldn't make arrangements, you wouldn't be too pleased. 2. You never know how the tide turns, some day you may need to go back to that stable and that won't happen if you burned the YO's trust.

To be fair to the YO you ought to give a months notice, after all it is her livelyhood and this would give her time to fill your place. If the boot was on the other foot and you were being asked to leave then I'm sure you'd like a months notice. Also you don't want to leave on bad terms.
 
If you have a livery contract that states 4 weeks notice then no - you don't have to stay but yes - you will be billed for the whole 4 weeks

It's up to you if you want to leave before the 4 weeks is up

if you have no livery contract then there is no obligation to pay the 4 weeks money
 
Apparently the contract I signed says I have to give 4 weeks notice, but I don't have a copy of it.
My YO lovely and I don't want to upset her, it's just that now I've made the decision to go, I want to go!
 
Then pay for the 4 weeks but just leave when you have arranged to leave. I'm sure she'll understand. As others have said, the horsey world is very small and most livery yard owners all know each other so you really don't want to leave under a dark cloud.
 
Yes you're right, I don't want to fall out with her.
I will probably leave in about 3 weeks then, as I am moving house on the 1st of september anyway, so best to leave him where he is until I get organised.
 
Definitely agree that it's best not to burn any bridges by doing one over on your current YO, especially as the lovely ones can be few and far between.

Looks like you'll only be a week out of pocket now considering your situation, but it could have been worse so make sure you get a copy of your new livery contract and go over it with a fine tooth comb!
