can we talk anatomic girths on flat ponies?

as i am always looking to waste £££ and make the boys more comfy.......

what girths could i look at for Sprout (as wide as he is tall, zero withers, so flat the water pools on him!)

currently in a pro choice as the slightly sticky texture helps cement his saddle in place. He has a M2M saddle on order which will have the Black Country native tree in and should be less prone to moving.

so once that arrives i could potentially move to a more anatomic girth as i am aware anything sticky is pulling at the hair and fascia?

nothing fairax or similar shape as it pushes the saddle back too far.

i am unsure if the stubben, prestige doughnut and new wow might have the central plate too wide? he is only 13hh.

does a normal (pony proportion) stud girth disperse the pressure better?

any other ideas?

I think the panel on the WOW could well be too wide, it suits Ludo well but he's 16.2 with a decent chest on him. I wouldn't risk £250 if you can't try one out.

My new WOW is ok on the 14h cob but not on the 13h v v wide, no withers, forward girth groove pony. It just doesn't sit right.

She's currently in a flex girth because all the anatomical ones have been too bulky for her armpits.

@sbloom has suggested a string girth so might try a cheapy when we finally get an XXX saddle that fits both of us

I have a flat wide Arab in an xxw Lavinia Mitchell Dressage saddle always had slipping or moving forwards with him but this saddle has been the best fit used with a Flexigirth saddle never moves and his comfortable in it.

They are not anatomical girths they are straight but they have elastic in the middle of the girth and I can honestly say mine doesn't move.

They are a very small company that designed them but not expensive and incredibly helpful they are happy to chat on the phone and reply to emails.

That's what I have on microcob and it seems to be acceptable to her - very nice company to deal with

12.3hh square welsh cross.
I managed to get an 18" old style Sue Carson dressage on FB. Brand new and actually fits the little barrel very well. Nothing moves, it doesn't rub her and she's going very nicely in it.
I would really like a tixerant for her, but 18" are like hens teeth.

I didn't think it would work as they look quite different from most girths but I have used a long one on my show saddle and now use a short one on the dressage saddle and they do work.

They are so lovely to deal with I ordered the wrong size and he sent me out a bigger one straight away.

Does your fitter have any advice? I find that the Dabbs ergonomic, and the Stubben cord girths are generally the best option on these shapes.

just said it will be a bit trial and error which tbf is true.

the cord girth i didnt find very stable on him, will look t the Dabbs one.

he seems to be that rare beast that needs a straight girth!

Louis my round wide one doesn't need shaped girths, the only shaped ones I've used were the leather showing type ones that are very slightly curved behind the elbow, but I only have non elastic ones or the saddle moves.

I think as long as the the horse doesn't have a forward girth groove straight is ok, my other Arab has to have an anatomical as his got such a forward girth groove straight just won't work.

You can normally pick up studd girths relatively cheaply (Ebay £20-30) and mine really helps my barrel shaped keep his saddle more stable.

Worth a try esp. if you don't need the cut away elbows.

I fit mostly straight girths, or certainly did for years till I started carrying a demo Dabbs girth, to forward girth groove ponies. A nice shaped Atherstone, with the centre panel as shaped as the padding, is what I'd recommend, avoid the budget ones with thin centre bands. As for elastic, it in part depends on how your saddle is fitted - the way I fit elastic at both ends, but strong elastic, is generally better with the Stubben girth the exception. My new-to-me brand also has elastic on its own girth designs.

Take a look at the WOW soft straight girths. Not anatomical but really soft flexible leather that seems to adapt to the horse

I use a straight, padded leather girth on a xw saddle on my flat backed, low withered native x pony. The saddle had been specially fitted for her by Kay Humphreys saddlery and an expensive lamp wick girth recommended and purchased but this inexpensive but good quality leather one has proved to be more satisfactory.

I’ve been trialling an H-girth on my Welsh d. Really like how it fits, and he appears to as well. Saddle is very stable (was rolling before). Must admit I’ve been looking at the other wow thread cursing that it appeared after I’d ordered my h girth.
