Can we use pedestrian railway crossings?

Yes as long as you use the orange phone to let them know. I presume you mean the gate ones? They are not the easiest as gates shut on springs but our local one has right of way to people, bikes and horses.

I have just found a photograph online, and yes it would appear to be one of these. I was just looking at the gate, wondering would my horse fit. I was going to give it a go if he does. Thanks so much, that's exactly what I needed to know :D

I used to use one but it had kissing gates on each side so my pony had to be pretty nifty as there wasn't room to turn round in the enclosed bit. I had to back him in, flip the gate across in front of his head and then ride out forwards and repeat at the far side of the track. He wasn't handy pony cup winner at the local riding club show for nothing.

As already said, phone the signaller first from the telephone at the crossing. They will be able to advise you how much time you have to cross, or may advise you to wait until x trains have gone by.
Also, be very careful where horse walks. There are gaps between the walk boards and the rail. I remember when I was a kid a horse slipping and getting his hoof stuck in the gap whilst using a level crossing. It didn't end well..

Maybe go and scope it out on foot, before you take the horse?
Exactly what I did today Faracat, and stupid damn gate is super narrow, far too narrow for nag. So annoying. It's definitely not from lack of space, so I'm going to find out, can I get it widened. It would keep horse riders off a fair bit of well used lane.

How annoying :(
Good luck with your quest :)

Crossings that are on a bridleway or road you can use, if they are on a footpath then no. Bridleway crossings should be a minimum standard too. Unless you're in Scotland of course then different rules apply
