Can you breed from a mare that has suffered from laminitis?

But the act of foaling can also induce laminitis.

I'm not sure if I would risk it in a mare that has a history of laminitis.

i learnt in shettie world its best to keep lamanitic mare in foal or with foal at foot as keeps it at bay, all those mares where the picture of health but ones that couldnt be bred from struggled a lot with it reoccuring, i also had a dartmoor that could get it so i put her in foal and again picture of health but now the foal has been weaned and she is not back in with new owners they have to keep close eye on her.

When my laminitic mare is breeding she is fine as the foal keeps the weight off her but if she is barren I have to watch her like a hawk!!

Ditto. My NF mare had laminitis mildly 8 years ago. She had a foal last year with no probs, and she has never been a better weight. She was actually skinny

when I weaned her 2 weeks ago and she has already put the weight back on and is back to normal

She'll be in her little bare paddock in 2 months time again

In the Welsh breeds there is a strong school of thought that actually putting a mare in foal helps keep laminitis at bay ( most cobs being naturally 'good doers'. Of course this depends on why the mare was prone to laminitis in the first place. Those that tend to carry more weight may benefit as a foal will obviously draw on the mare to some degree.
However some mares suffer from hormonal laminitis and whilst fine when baren, the hormonal changes during pregnancy can actually bring on laminitis even in early pregnancy.

Thanks for all your replies, they're really helpful.

The problem at the moment is that we don't know why she has suddenly and totally unexplainably, come down with lami. Bloods have all come back normal so vet is baffled.

Obviously I will wait and see what happens over the next few months but it's good to hear that we might still have hope for putting her in foal.

My vet actually recommended that I put my Lami welsh A in foal.
She duly went to stud but didnt take!!

Having lost another mare with Lami after giving birth Im not sure that there is enough reasoning behind this idea.
