A zebra?

Just wondering really... Is it legal in the uk to keep a zebra as a pet, and if so, do you need a licence?

Where would you buy one?

Please note... I am not about to buy a zebra and keep it in the garden or break it to ride etc... Just curious.

No but I love them, and potentially could have land / shelter etc to keep 5 or 6 and breed them, seeing as they're endangered etc!!

It's just a thought and please button pushers I am not going to go and just buy a zebra on a whim... I am a little more sensible than that ... ( I'll buy 2 to keep each other company :p )

I'm sure you need a licence.

See tizer a member on here.
She runs a livery yard and also has zebras plus some exotic donkey!

She has said how many hoops she had to jump through to keep them.

From memory... years since I've had any involvement with them but they USED to be (and presumably still are) classed as a dangerous animal and you need the appropriate transport licences for them.

Oooh, I will pm tizer... Where would I find out about a license etc? Local council? All I can see on google are forums with idiots saying how they know about horses so want a zebra, no actual info on how to go about getting info on them...

Zak the zebra is pretty funky...

My thinking is ( and it is purely thinking ) that I'd like to set up some sort of zebra / pony / donkey and small animal farm and do trips for inner city children / children from troubled homes etc... I think that if I can make 1 child in 10 happy it'll be worth it. They could come, with carers / chaperones for 3 or 4 days staying in mobile homes on site and learn all about caring for the animals, ride the horses, look after sock lambs etc, have bbqs, go to beach and all sorts of fun stuff. Obviously it'd have to make enough money to cover itself but I'm not looking to make huge profits. I can do zebra appearances for the money :p

Obviously I know planning, licenses and alot of research etc will have to be done as it's a HUGE thing, and I'm not in a position to do so at the moment, but in the near future I should be....

So... What do you think?

Am I totally mad??

I don't know how well they'd cope over here....might be over thinking things, but surely their feet/diet/lifestyle would be some-what alien to them here.

Don't donkey's struggle with feet over here because of grass here or something like that? Zebra's might be similar...

I might just be rambling crap mind!!!

Kattd66... Very good idea - allthough I don't think they would 'lease' them as such, they'd want them all on view presumably, but deffo worth an ask.

Cobandonion - not sure about lami... Need to do ALOT of research before I do anything... Just wishful thinking atm.

And Binky... Also, don't know is the answer... I have alot of reading / talking to experts to do

Hello All, I've already tried to post this so if you get it twice I'm sorry. Yes I do have zebras! There are 3 types, Hartmanns they are Vulnerable status, Grevys are endangered and Plains zebras are least concern. It is Plain zebras you have found for sale in Europe. You will need a DWA (dangerous wild animal licence) this is issued by you council and will run for 2 years once your enclosure has been inspected and passed and each individual council can set their own price for this licence. You will need minimum of 6ft fencing, mine is 8ft and they have put it to the test! It would help you if you were a member of BIAZA (british and irish association of zoos and aquariums) and ABWAK (associaton of british wild animal keepers) I think that is some basic info, prob best if you want to know more just add to this post and I will try and reply and help if I can. Oh and the exotic donkey I have here that blucanoo mentioned, are in fact Somali Wild Ass! The rarest equid in the world and mighty fabulous they are too.
Feel free to ask away.

Thanks tizer...
Do they have to have an enclosure as such or is a paddock ( high fenced )with field shelter ok? ( stables for winter if needed ) and have you had difficulties between horses and zebras? Obviously they're turned out separately right? I realise I sound like a total numpty...

An enclosure is a safe and secure paddock. My enclosure has 8ft deer fencing around it and is 2 acres in size, it has 2 large sand pits in for rolling and a third rolling area that can have different surfaces added to it for enrichment. Each Wild equid has a stable and an individual hard standing area and then there is a community hard standing area, they aren't to fond of mud and the hard stand areas allow them to be out without being in the mud in the winter, it also help with foot wear.
You are more than welcome to come and visit my guys if you really are serious about getting them. The enclosure will set you back a fair £££££ and the transportation is costly too as it is normally a specialist company that deals with all the transportation.

You also have to bear in mind that depending upon where you get a zeb from will depend how wild it is, people may say they have tame ones, but they have no been domesticated so their flight and fight instinct are HUGE! They make a wild fiesty 12.2pony with attitude look like a pussy cat!
Now don't think you are asking silly questions as you are not, it is all relevant. Please keep asking and I will try to keep answering, even if it seems like the most daft question it probably is not. :)
