Can you do more than one class at the Area Festivals?

I have suddenly realised that I have now qualified for the Prelim and the Novice (at least I think I have

)... So, I was just wondering whether you could do both? It will be experience for Grace more than anything else, I do not expect to get anything at all as we have only just started out together, but I thought it would do her good to go to something like that.

Are the competitions usually any different to the normal BD ones (it is being held at a venue we have been to before)?

Yes you can 2 but I don't know the ins and outs of it all. I went to Ardingly Area Festivals with previous horse in 2005. It was pretty much the same as normal BD but there was a speaker with someone saying who you were etc and some music being played quietly. You also get 2 judges and a mounted prize giving.

I don't think I need to worry about the prize giving bit... she'd be a complete prat anyway

The speaker wasn't bothering that many horses I don't think.

Well mine fell over at the start of the prize giving with my leg underneath him!! He thought a drain was scary, spooked and slipped over!!
 
As Finn says, normally a rider competing at two levels must ride as Open at the lower one. However, Prelim/Novice is the exception to the rule.

As Open Prelim doesn't lead to any kind of championship, there is no option for a Prelim rider to "upgrade". So, it is quite in order to compete at Prelim and Novice.

echo this - Open Prelim is completely different to Open at the other levels and there are no Open Prelim Champs. If you are eligible to qualify for anything at Prelim you go in Restricted, so that is the only level at the champs. So it's fine to do prelim and novice restricted.

I am definitely entering her for the Prelim, but as we've only done 2 Novice tests so far, I am a bit wary of entering the Novice as I think we may be somewhat outclassed.

Just had a quick look at the schedule, and the Prelim is Open anyway (P16) and the Novice is N22, Open and Restricted.
 
Yup - you do the same test what ever venue you are at, so its P16 and N22 for all the petplans everywhere

Normally the Novices are really high scoring classes - Blossy got 71% last year and still only came 3rd in the open! I think the winner of the restricted got 70%. But its all good experience as if you come in the top 8 you get a rosette and have to do a mounted prizegiving which is really good for them.
 
I don't think Grace would stand for a mounted prize giving... although like I said, I don't think we will be in with a chance this year. Maybe next year she will be ready for something like that.

I am hoping she will qualify for the regionals next year too... but I am not too concerned about it as she has only been competing BD for one and a half months. We have a long way to go yet I think
