Some of you may have seen my previous post where my girl has double barrelled her wall in between her and a stable mate. She had 2 weeks living out while they fixed the wall and now she is back in. However, she is moving to another stable in 2 weeks (waiting for another livery to leave) but i am paranoid that she will do it again (her and gelding dont get on). My thoughts were that if i keep her occupied with hay then she will be less likely to interact with him? I am now giving her 3 haynets a night and apart from getting quite costly was wondering if there was any other problems with doing this?

Chocs all round:)

Can she see him through bars or something? Can you block those in so she can't see out sideways?
I don't think you can give too much hay, I always feed it ad lib anyway and they self regulate. She will need less hard food, you can save money that way!

My old girl used to get all the hay she wanted, she never got fat, however, she lived out and was a veteran. This is the only point of concern for me with this possibility. Try it and see how she goes. You could also try other things in her stable like snack balls, lickits, vegetables hanging down...

Hi, Unfortunately when she stands with her head out of her door he will stand in the corner next to her constantly staring at her and her being a ginger mare tells him to bugger off ! There are now slats above the wall as he would lean over and just glare at her the whole time - poor girl!:)

errmmm .... well depends on how much of a "good doer" she is ;). If I fed mine enough unsoaked good quality hay in large holed nets to last all night they would certainly gain weight.   ...... so yes you can feed too much hay to some horses.

If it was soaked hay in small holed nets or if I was feeding a warmblood / tb then it might be a different matter ;)

sorry you are having probs btw ( I did not see the other thread ) and that your lass does not like her neighbour ... we cant make them like each other can we :o

What a nuisance...horses!...can you bodge something with a cardboard box, baler twine and agri tape to block her view from him?

Cheers Tazzle, im not worried about her weight issues she is a 16.2 ID and her shaoe never really changes - yeah i no bloody horses worse than the kids lol:D

Sorry if i am sounding thick here, but if she is moving stable why would she still be next to the same gelding? Also I assume there are no other stables you could do a swap with?

Re the hay, if mine had to have ad lib I would soak it as they are good doers so would be concerned with weight gain.

Thanks Guys,
Sidney, she has to stay in that stable for 2 weeks as they are building two more stables and then she can move. The stable she is moving to there is a mare in there and they will probably be in the same situ if they were to swap now x:)
