Can you feed more than one type of calmer?

I feed two types of calmers, but theyre magnesium based, magnitude, and magic.

I myself dont like trytophan as i find it can turn some horses aggressive, as it tends to have a bravening affect and for those that are relatively cocky, it turns them into a nightmare. Ie our sect d turned into a raving lunatic on it, and he was a selfassured idiot at the best of times. But i always thought for a quiet nervous horse it may help.

But thats just me!!

Hmmm... not sure if I am doing the right thing. I have a late starting 6 year old who goes beautifully for a while, then suddenly panics at fairly minor things. I *think* it is a lack of confidence, but was hoping that a calmer would just keep his adreneline in check a little.

He is on calmer chaff and will be having brewers yeast and 85% pure magnesium - and I have ordered some of the Equine America So Kalm as well...

I also have some valerian from trailer training with another horse.

He is coming home from training tomorrow and will be going straight out 24/7.

I can't think of anything else that I can do to give him confidence, other than make sure that there is always a rock steady neddy with him.

Thoughts/ suggestions?

Have you tried magnitude, its cheap only £18.99 for 6 months and its great, it really seems to relax horses that are tense as it helps to relax mussles.

It could be lack of confidence, as he is only young and by the sounds of it, still learning his job. Id keep working him with another horse for support for a while until he is accustomed to going out with you and working.
Id also make sure you keep any sugars to a minimum and i cant recommend magnitude enough as we have all of our youngsters on it to help keep them relaxed and concentrated. :)

Thanks for coming back. I will go and have a look at Magnitude. I've done so much searching through old threads to see what works and the general consensus seems to be that "different things work for different horses"...

There is bound to be something that will just calm his frazzled nerves though - and having a dobbin to go with him should hopefully give him confidence.

Thatnks for your replies. The link is the same place that I have got the magnesium from, so that's good. I have the nupafeed, so can use that and I have ordered So Kalm, which is the tryptophan calmer.

I also have valerian, which I can use as there is no way that we will be competing for a while - I want a happy, confident horse when we start going to parties and would hope to have sorted out a valerian free regime for him by then.
