As title, general question knowing not much about traditional feeding..

On a general voyage of discovery and niched education at the moment..

Thank you :)

To be honest you should seek advice from a nutritionist NOT affiliated with a big feed company.

I feed oats to horses that showed IR type symptoms when on commercial feeds. They have had zero issues with feeding oats plus a bit of Alfalfa and vits and mins.

But I am a not a nutritionist so really I'm just a random stranger giving information. You will find a variety of answers I'm sure. Some even saying an idiot would only feed oats to an IR horse. I just do what works for my lot and so far no complaints.

I would say that in very general terms straights will be much better than commercial feeds, most of which have some kind of added cereal and/or sugar. One expert on these things is Jackie J A Taylor who now has her own online store - might be worth seeking her out (Google her).

A lot depends on what you mean by straights? Some people just use the term to mean straight cereals (oats, barley, maize etc) whereas really it is any pure, unsupplemented, unmixed feedstuff, so could include things like unmollassed beet, linseed, etc.
