Ok so this sounds like a daft question but....

Our tack box is locked with a padlock which came with 2 keys. My mum has one and I have the other which was fine till I got a sharer

Now I need a third key because the sharer will eventually be up there by herself and obviously need access to tack. I went to town and got a duplicate made from my key and we tried it out before the weekend but unfortunately the new key doesn't even fit into the padlock! Like as in not even a little bit! All the "teeth" line up fine with mine but I think the problem is that the new key is too wide

I kept the reciept and was told if it didn't work to take it back so I'm going to do this on Monday or Tuesday.

So should I cut my losses and go and buy a new combination padlock (or one that comes with 3 keys if I can find one) or is it actually possible to get a new padlock key cut?

Ask the key cutter to try again, sometimes they arent cut quite right, might need filing down, might be worth taking padlock with you

Thanks, glad to know it can be done :o
I'll wait till I've taken the tack out of the box and then take the padlock along with me and see what they can do :)

Ide maybe try another key cutter, weve had a million padlock keys cut (both me and previous livery very absent minded!) and never had a problem. Once youve had a copy of a copy of a copy etc they start getting a little tricky and take some wangling 1st but you shouldnt find any issue with a copy straight from the original

I used Timpsons and it was a first copy  If it doesn't work when I take it back to get it fixed I'll go elsewhere though :o

Always take the padlock with you when you go to pick the key up. Then you can be sure it works before you pay or leave the shop.
