...an equivalent alternative to Dengie Hi-Fi Lite? My old mare (27 yo) has been on this for many, many years but over the last few months, I've found it to be very, very stalky and she leaves a lot. She is fed this as a "filler" for her very small amount of short feed. She is a very good doer, so I'm not looking for anything to put on condition. She is retired BTW. Thanks in advance.

If I were you I'd give Dengie a call so they can comment about the changes you have seen in their product. I know years ago HiFi used to be Alfalfa and oat straw but I've just had a quick look on their website and now they only refer to 'quality straw' so they could have made changes. I used to buy Bailey's Golden Chaff which was molassed OAT straw, about a year ago when a delivery arrived I noticed their packaging was different so I read the ingredients and they had changed to molassed WHEAT straw and also started to add limestone. The changes weren't well advertised and I wasn't very happy, especially as I live in a remote area and had it specially ordered for my horse who is on a low calcium diet!! I'm not saying Dengie have done anything like that but it's worth a phone call.

Thanks everyone. Sueonmull, it's not the straw bits that are the problem, but the Alfalfa stalks that are twig-like. Her teeth are just fine, in fact the vet (also a horse dentist) commented on how good her teeth were for a horse of her age. I really mean that the stuff she leaves are really like chunks of wood! I think, you're right, I'll give Dengie a call and see if they can throw any light on this!
