I have had it with his mane!....I could live with the length if it wasn't so bloomin thick, it looks like a haystack stuck on his neck and has the same texture :mad: I'm so tempted to just chop the lot off, I've tried a solo rake but that just seems to make it coarser and he's not impressed with pulling. Any suggestions before I lop it all off?

If you intend to show him then definitely not I'm afraid!

Is he quite young? You will be surprised how it changes as they get older and it *should* thin out and lose some of the thickness and coarseness. :)
 
You can hog anything you want.

I'd thin it out with a mane rake then pull it the traditional way.

Personally I would continue to thin it out and start using a mane and tail conditioning spray. Try smoothing it and leaving long plaits in to try and tame it.
 
As Lous has stated you can hog any mane, but remember manes are there for a purpose, a mane can protect from flies and in the winter it is useful for insulation.

I have a Shetland and a Welsh cross and they have long manes. I don't find it any trouble to keep the manes well brushed to remove dead hair and clumping.

There are plenty of products available to tame bushy manes.

I have tried plaiting it but they just stuck out :( I've started using a mane and tail spray so shall keep my fingers crossed it works. :)
AF he's 2 so here's hoping it does thin a little.
Texel it does get brushed so it doesn't usually have hay stuck it in, he had got in the way of the hay being thrown in the field in the pic, it's more the thickness and texture I'm having problems with.
 
Awh hes gorgeous! I have a nf too but he has quite a thin mane. My tb doesnt like his mane being pulled so i cut it to the length i want gradually and cut into it so it doesnt look too staright, i think you should keep his mane and he will need it for the flies! :)
 
My NF has a really thick double mane too. It all tends to sit on the correct side so I am quite lucky, but he has only just turned a year old. I would put a photo on but can't do it on my phone.
 
My pony has a thick bushy mane but it is there for a purpose to keep him warm in the winter and to stop the flies from bothering him in that area in the summer.

You can hog any pony or horse if you want but I would not do it especially if they live out or spend a lot of time unrugged in the field.

I don't show my NF anymore as I do mainly dressage and show jumping now so I just leave his mane to grow in a natural bushy way. If comb it on a regular basis that will take out some of the hair and I use a spray on mine to tame it a bit.

Like I said before, I am pretty sure it will "de-fluff" as he gets older... in the meantime lots of conditioning spray and brushing it to help get rid of the dead hairs etc.

Only joking, as others have said, yes you can hog - but wouldn't necessarily say it's the right things to do.
I have no problems with my Shetlands mane, and use an Oster mane and tail brush. Roma do a similar one for much less £. Failing that a large paddle brush with teeth, and a squirt of detangler.
Shouldn't be difficult if you do it regularly. :)
 
Human hair conditioner, plait down his neck, rinse and repeat weekly, it works, one of my foresters has a similar mane, bog brush head, i use Herbal Essence or similar, Tresemme if it's on special offer is pretty good, wash and smother his mane in it then plait down, when i say that i mean start and hold the plait as near to his neck as possible rather than pulling the plait towards you, a few wks of this and hey presto soft laying down mane which i then maintain with weekly lashings of Magic Sheen. Funny one of my other foresters has a totally different mane, thin and not a lot of it.
 
Ok...the mane has a temporary reprieve and the mane spray will be given a go :D I wish some of the thickness would migrate to his tail as that's a thin pathetic looking thing :rolleyes:
