I have one of my GSP's with Petplan on covered for life and it's £45 a month. I have to stay with them for the long haul now as he has a problem with his leg which will flare up again throughout his life. I'm looking to re insure my other GSP on a covered for life policy, and i'm a bit twitchy using non pet specialist insurers after what happened with Halifax cancelling their pet insurance with no warning. He's currently coming up at £55 with petplan (we've never made a claim) and this will automatically rise to over £60 next year when the initial discount ends. Seems a bit steep. And i don't think NFU do covered for life.

So can anyone recommend me a pet specialist insurer who is good but not such a rip off?

I would only go petplan. Have seen too many people come unstuck with other policies.

I have lifetime cover for my GSP with Esure.

No, not specialist but have had to claim twice on a recuring problem after he snapped a toe nail and they paid up really quickly with no quible (and I was concerned that they may be funny about the 2nd claim)

I pay a LOT les than £55/month!!

Galaxy, it's so funny petplan told me on the phone today that GSPs now are classified as high risk dogs (along with viszlas) hence the high premiums due to the sheer number of claims they get. Not surprised, they are so accident prone and high energy!

ooooooo heck!!! don't tell me things like that!!!

The snapped toe is the only real issue we've had that has required a vet and taken its time to heal. He's 2.5 years....

Oh, except the time he grazed his testicles!!! ha ha! Took him to the vet for pain killers and anti-b's!! He got a LOT of sympathy from the (male) vet!! ha ha!

Have we seen piccies of your GSPs????? :)

I use NFU and they do for life.

My boy is now 10 and I have got 3 on going claims. They have been very good, although yes my monthly outgoing is about £40 a month but only because of the claims and his age.

I wanted to go with NFU as they are so great with my horse. But when I rang them they wouldn't cover H as he had been to the vets for something other than his routine jabs! (that was before the toe nail issue, when his only extra visit had been his sore testicles!)

I took out insurance with NFU when we first rehomed our springer at 14 months old, she is now 4. Last April she had soft tissue damage to her back leg, they first thought it was a dislocated hip but thank god it wasn't. Anyway just this years policy through and its gone from £17.99 a month to £35 !!! not impressed, but I'm stuck now. I went with them because they don't exclude anything you've claimed for previously, its £4000 vet fees per year per ailment, if the ailment continues you get £4000 the following year too. BUT looks like I'm paying for that now through my premium.

The claim I made last year was for approx £600, they paid out no quibble but am disappointed in the premium rate now.

I used Petplan years ago for a GSD I had, they were very good, paid out quicly etc but as with my horse they exclude injuries claimed for the following year

AXA get good reviews and are usually cheaper than Petplan...

The other bonus is that they are 'direct' (underwrite their own products)insurers like petplan and NFU so little chance that they will withdraw from the market like Halifax did.

We have life cover with M&S for a very injury prone dog and have claimed quite a few times with no probs (broken leg, cut that was stapled, two nasty dog bites). We pay £33.50 but she's down as a crossbreed. I'm not sure how that compares but i think most of her would be written off with another insurer!

Pet Plan does seem to be the preferred provider. Remember that Hallifax went under a couple of months back. Personally I'm in the US and I use a vet discount program - Pet Assure - instead of pet insurance.

Thank you for all the replies. I managed to negotiate a good covered for life deal with NFU (didn't realise they did it) which came in at half the price. Bargain!
