My LWVTB horse is coming on May 10th (I am sure you lot are sick of that phrase by now - I have said it so many times) and on the advise of the owner I am going to worm him on Panacur five day Sunday - Thursday.
Question is - can I ride during this period? I am a believer that you should get on your new horse asap to get it used to your routine, but obviously don't want to put my boy in any danger.
Any advice greatfully recieved

Our yard had this debate the other week and alot of people were saying they shouldnt be ridden or at least shouldnt be doing hard work or getting sweated up - i have no idea why not though!

Why on earth not. I can understand this with vaccinations but not wormers. Our yard all rode when having done the 5 day wormer the other month (except me whose horse is on box rest - boo hoo)

I never ride whilst my horse is being wormed, or for at least a day afterwards. I know the vets and manufacturers tell you that its fine, but I have seen so many horses - especially on the 5 day course - who have been under the weather whilst still being ridden. The way I look at it is that by worming, you are introducing chemicals into their system to rid them of the worms, and no one will convince me that they will not ever feel some kind of physical effect. It just isnt worth it to me - I'd rather leave her for a day (or indeed, six days if she is being wormed on a course) than ride her and have her feeling poorly.

I'm with Mizelz on this one - the chemical s sre pretty harsh on a horse's system and whilst I might take a gentle stroll, I wouldn't work them.

I rode mine when I got him and he had the 5 day wormer and there wasn't a problem, in fact he needed it as he was confined to the box for those days and needed the exercise. Nothing majorly strenuous.

If it also helps I've sent my son to rugby after worming him too......

Panacur 5 day is not a harsh wormer, and there is really no reason not t ride whilst using it. Likewise, there really is no reason not to ride after worming UNLESS your horse has some reaction.

Personally I would ride but not overdo it, however as the horse is LWVTB I would ask the owner what they would do. You can say you've had conflicting advice (true enough!) and want to make sure with her, not only is it polite while the horse still belongs to her, she'll also see that you have the horse's best interests at heart
