I'm new to showing and just wondered if anyone knows whether you're allowed to show in a Kimblewick. I have a feeling not, but I've tried to google the answer and not come up with anything! I know snaffles, pelhams and doubles are OK, and as a Kimblewick is similar in action to a pelham I thought maybe...

This is just for local unaffiliated stuff - cobs, coloureds, hunter classes etc. I've shown him in a snaffle already, but he's currently going beautifully in the school in a Kimblewick so I'd like to transfer this to the show ring, as I don't have the best control in a snaffle.

You can use any bit for most showing classes, but to look the part you should use a pelham with 2 reins if you want the extra control without using a double.

Why dont you try a pelham it will look better to be honest, if he goes well in a kimblewick he should be fine in a pelham, they do the ported mouth piece the same as a kimblewick.

No a kimblewick is not legal in showing- unaffiliated you shouldn't get massively penalised but its not "proper"

Someone queried a 3 ring gag few weeks ago and I said same thing about that but go and have fun and the bits not being "proper" for an unaffiliated showing show is being a itsy bit predantic :)

I wouldn't show at any level in anything that isn't supposed to be used as I am keen on me showing and I like to do it "proper"
Good luck, its all fun :D

Ah ok, I think I'll stick to a snaffle then for the show this weekend. I haven't practised in a pelham with 2 reins yet, so probably better to stay with what we know! He's fine in a snaffle at shows, just goes a bit better in a kimblewick! I've actually bought a ported pelham (exactly the same mouthpiece as his kimblewick) but after speaking to a judge at the last show she said she'd rather see a horse go nicely in a snaffle than a double/pelham before it's ready.

Why not ride in a Pelham with d rings? Nothing wrong with this at affiliated level :)
