I remember being told a while ago that if you pass the full Pony Club B test, you can skip BHS stages 1 and 2 and go on to do stage 3. Is this correct? I looked on the BHS website but couldn't find any info on this.

Just interested, not planning on taking BHS stage 3 quite yet!

I was told the same - once you have your B test you can go striaght to your stage 3. I don't know for sure, but it's what I've always been told so I would assume that it is.

Oh yeah, no it takes you to stage 3, well so I've been told. A test is so hard, I swear only about 5 people pass it every year.

A girl who had passed her A test couldn't ride my old pony though, he was that badly behaved that she couldn't get him over a teeny jump

Yes, but I have a feeling the direct entry rule only applies if you are still an active PC member - I could be wrong though.

A test gives you direct PTT entry.

There are provisos - B test exempts you from BHS Stages I and II providing you are currently a member of the Pony Club OR you took it less than 5 years ago.

When I asked them a couple of years ago whether my B Test exempted me they nearly had a fit - I took it in 1977!

Aha - looks like they've changed it since I enquired! At that time though one could only be a member of the Pony Club until one was 21, not 25 as it is nowadays.

If you take the BRC Equitation & Horse Welfare exams up to level three in each you are exempt fom BHS stages 1 & 2. Total cost in exam fees is (I think) £45.

Yes i've done it that way - did my complete pony club 'B' test, then did the stage 3. You have the option of direct entry at stage 2 or stage 3 - although i'd say that the B test difficulty seemed very similar to stage 3 (aside from the fact that you are riding strange horses) so can't see why you'd go in at stage 2. When I did my B test 6 people out of 8 failed the stable management (I was one of the lucky two!) so beware that it does need some revision. Also, you can only apply for this direct entry if you are an 'active member' of a pony club - so you still have to be 25 or under, joined up, and doing something for them - in my case, i re-joined the pony club centre of the riding school i was working at, and did the quiz team for them.

I don't think that 'A' test does mean direct entry into stage 4 - although you can apply for direct entry to stage 4 if you have proven experience - not sure what kind of experience they are looking for though!!
