Hi there,

I have a horse who has had tendonitis in the past and had it medicated 5 years ago (before I owned him). Been completely sound until about 8 weeks ago. I have arranged for the same vet who treated him to come out again next week for consistency- his previous owner is a friend of mine.

He does have a twisted pelvis since an injury aged 5, we have a chiropractor for that regularly.

He is 16, and a wonderful boy who I have taken up dressage with. He probably has several areas of wear. This is to give him the most comfortable experience for his advancing years. I regularly have injections into my own wrist and know they work for me.

We used to give horses Adequan years ago for arthritis in several areas. Is it still available in the UK as an option? I can’t see it’s still available other than the US. The vet will tell me when he comes but wanted to be aware of options in advance of this. Been many years since I have had to treat- likelihood it’s OA in a few areas brought in by the biomechanical misalignment due to the offhind tendonitis over the years.

Thank you

Is it a steroid? I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it listed before when my boy has had his hocks medicated in the past.

Thank you Saturday girl. I think cartrofen is slightly different it is pentosan polysulphate so a PPS from plants rather than psgag which are animal derivatives-and from what I have read isn’t as effective on OA but happy to be corrected from those that have used it. I know Adequan in the 90’s was quite effective but the newer ones may be just as good. I just can’t find that you can get it on prescription from the UK anymore, just in US. US has a different governing body so maybe it’s not allowed here anymore

You can get Adaquan here still. Your vet will need to order it with a special import certificate, which is basically a formality. I use cartrophen on my horse however and it has made a massive difference to him.

Thank you for confirming. I will speak to him about this as an additional option if it’s still available and cartrofen as it’s not something I have used previously
