As above really. I wondered how it would work if you bought a horse with known problems - could you take over the existing policy from the old owner?

Looking at an ex-lami pony. He's had/undergoing remedial farriery withe farrier discussing with vets. He's a lovely boy, quite smitten. Just dawned on me that insurance might be an issue! I know he's insured at the moment, and they are covering costs.

Can the policy move with the horse?

Depends on the company I guess, ordinarily you should take out a new policy - you will be asked to complete a new proposal form of they do allow you to transfer it.

Yeah - depends on the company I guess - Horses change hands much more often as a general rule than domestic pets do. If we were looking at a sound pony and owner hadn't disclosed any problem to us, then it wouldn't be a problem to get a new policy. However, current owner has told us, and although sound, said pony would need ongoing remedial farriery, and with lami background I feel it would only be fair to him for his medical history to follow him.... Maybe it's the Vet Nurse (SA) in me :p but better that I ask these questions now :o

Can you 'phone the actual insurance company involved and just ask them 'hypothetically'? I'm sure they would be helpful.

I've sold a horse and passed on a policy to the new owners. It was with Scottish Equestrian. I think I had to call and give their details and permission for the policy to be transfered. I know someone at my current yard has adopted a policy when buying a horse but not sure what company that was with.
