Can you teach a 10 year new things?

I have an approx 10 year old cob who I rescued in march. She is very green schooling and jumping and naps constantly but we are working on it. More like a newly broken pony.

Any advise on schooling etc for a 10 year old VERY set in her ways?

Yes! Lots of time and effort but it pays off, I bought a 12 year old endurance horse and after 4 years decided to start showjumpug which he had never dine before and at 16 he started popping 110. Age is only a number and it might rake longer but hard Work pays off!
 
Can you teach a ten year old new things? Yes! I retrained an 11 year old steeple chaser and he went on to do elementary level dressage when he was thirteen. My 17 year old is learning new things every week with her clicker training. Good luck with her!
 
Yes - I'm currently reschooling my 12yo cob.
Patience is definately the key - it won't happen overnight. Best tip of all- find a really good instructor, they can see what's happening from the ground and push you on when you feel despondent. Mine is worth her weight in gold- I struggled for a year on my own but we've achieved more than I ever thought we would this summer with her help!

Yes! 2 years on, and Reg is now doing BE100 :D Time, patience, repetition and the belief there is light at the end of the tunnel!!

ABSOLUTELY! If you have an hour or two ;) look back over my past posts about Hugo. I bought him in December, aged 10. He was obviously VERY green and unschooled. My instructor (YO) said that he was more like a baby of 4. I think his previous owner hacked him out a couple of times a week - that's all! It has taken a good few months of hard work on my instructor's part and some very lucky circumstances! He is used for lessons during the week (when I'm at work) and he has therefore had a vast amount of schooling. One of the other larger horses was off sick for a few weeks, so Hugo filled in for him. That was the best thing that could have happened, giving him the chance to do loads of work in the school.

I must say, without my instructor I don't know how long it would have taken (if at all!) to get him right - and I will be eternally grateful to her! She can be a funny old stick ;), but she has given me the horse of my dreams! :D:D:D
 
yes I am retraining my driving horse ( he was not enjoying it ) and he was 10 when we rebroke him to ride he's 11 now it's been very entertaining the cantering was a experience in it's self but he has a talent for the dressage and is enjoying life now so yes you can retrain them for ajob they are suited to but it takes patience and time.
 
YES! You just need time, patience and a good instructor!

I bought Jack as a 10 year old, he'd only ever been used as a hack and had never been schooled and had little idea of what was being asked of him. It took 18 months to teach him to right canter.

4 years later he has won countless rosettes for dressage, showing, SJ and eventing, and we do fun rides and hunt too.

For me the highlight has to be coming 4th out of 42 in a BE80, and being told by my current instructor that we are getting too good to be doing prelim dressage!

Keep trying, you will get there in the end. Don't be afraid to try different bits, sometimes a change of bit can help a lot while you work through a certain problem. If you can find something they enjoy like jumping, use it to your advantage e.g. helping with canter leads etc.
 
I imagine so - I'm teaching my 18 year old to long rein at the moment we are both loving it and gutted I didn't try it before so if we can do that you should have no problems
 
Thanks for all of the replies I feel really positive now give it a year and we will see where we are. I was just feeling a little despondent after some comments recently. Well work starts tomorrow will keep you all posted
 
Absolutely..I've been schooling my very green tb over the past year and is doing amazing. My cousin has also just backed his driving hackney for his wife to ride.
