I have been offered some canadian hay which is made of alfalfa and it looks quite good but not sure how to feed it etc so wondered whether anyone on here uses it and also how much they pay for a bale.
Thx
You would want to check out what percentage of each bale is alfalfa and ask what other grasses are in this hay. If you have happy hackers then you won't want to feed too high a percentage of alfalfa otherwise your horse will be bouncing off the roof - we try to keep our alfalfa, averaged over all of our fields, down to about 40%. Some of our fields run at about 25% and some run to around 60%.
If I was you I would ask for a copy of the Crop Analysis. This will be very helpful to you on how best to alter/manage/discard your feeding of hard feed. Hard feed may not be required if this hay is top quality.
You also want to ask whether this is 1st cut, 2nd cut or 3rd cut hay. This makes a difference too.
We are selling our hay over here in Canada for 3.50 a bale, so I would expect you to be paying somewhere around £6 upwards for 60lbs bales.
Thank you for some good advice and I will ask the percentage of alfalfa. They are approx 75lb bales and they are asking £10 per bale. I was hoping to feed it to my broodmares so will ask also for the crop analysis. He did drop one bale off for us to look at and it seemed very good.
