Back in october I bought a 143cm gelding to produce over the winter and sell on early next summer once he had gotten out eventing a little bit. I’m having trouble with saddles but don’t want to splurge on anything too expensive if he isn’t going to be staying much longer!! I have a devecoux monoflap for my ISH but as he stands at 16.1, the saddle obviously won’t fit a little 14hh pony.

I’ve read into the cavaletti collection monflap saddles - has anyone tried these before? They are only £950 so very cheap but should do the job for a few 100s. Do they put you in a good seat, balance, good lower leg support etc?

Why not get a quality second hand? They hold their value more

cavaletti saddles are adjustable and said pony is only 5 therefore forever changing shape. I’m not bothered about keeping its value, it’s only going to have use for the next few months before he’s sold then it’ll likely just go to storage anyway.

We have a cavaletti jump saddle (not the monoflap) and it fits our skinny 14.1 Welshy really nicely. It has a very flat tree apparently, so although the gullet width can be altered, the shape of the tree has to suit the pony. It was fitted and checked by a pro, and we are very happy with it so far.

Thank you, is it fairly supportive to jump in? As I said earlier, the pony is only 5 therefore can throw in some rather interesting (and unexpected) moves? He’s only training around 110 so nothing too big.

What are you riding him in at the moment whilst you're schooling 3ft6..

an old kent and masters pony jump saddle which I found in the storage room, it’s been fitted and is good on him but i’m long legged so it’s less than ideal for me and has resulted in me almost hitting the deck when she’s thrown in some special moves?

It really is impossible to say whether a saddle is supportive, despite marketing attempts by so many companies. It will be supportive IF it suits you on that horse, and you can't always go off what you think suits you, the number of requests I get for deep seats, and none of them get truly deep seats, I only have one model that even comes close, yet their new saddle suits them better than their old ones. Sorry!

I know one or two fitters like them, they're from the Bliss of London stable, but you will lose more money than if you found a used saddle that suited both of you. If the tree fits and you like riding in it then go for it, I'm sure they have some kind of trial period and of course if you have it fitted you'd at least ride in it at the fitting.
