more of a training question really (dog is too young and I am not sure if I could ever run in public).

On the website I've looked at it talks about getting the dog to pull you. I have spent no small effort getting my dog to not pull me-can they be taught the difference? Or should I just get myself that beagle pup I've been threatening eveyone with and be done with it? ;) It looks fun.

I am out of the running habit but starting again (without dog just now) I do like running xc although only where the audience will be local deer and blackies). I usually let the dog I have run loose so was wondering how this works (ie how often to you end up on your face).

Can't speak for all dogs but mine know the difference between loose lead walking and any of the pulling things they do, they have different harnesses and collars for the various disciplines and also recognise what trainers and kit bags I pull out.

You learn to windmill your arms so as to avoid falling over. :D In all seriousness though the best way to start out is to buddy up with someone experienced or join a group training run, dogs tend to get the idea a bit quicker and enjoy the early runs more when the chase instinct kicks in. Once they've cottoned on and can run smoothly without being distracted it's a lot easier. A really good dog will even help you out in a sticky patch, keep you upright through mud etc.

I do not do cani cross but I take one of my bitches with me when I am the 'hare' for OH and one of our other dogs who has to track me down. The bitch I take will walk at heel or on a loose lead on normal walks but when she is on a long line and harness she goes in front and can be a big help up steep hills. Her lead training is handy to make sure she does not pull me off my feet going downhill or on muddy ground. She is the fit one of the partnership and I am sure I would find it much harder to do this without her. Just make sure your commands are consistent and always obeyed or the dog tends to take charge.

we do a bit for fun (never seem to get to my 5k goal) but the dogs know when the gear goes on what we are doing that day.
i do agility and obedience too-they just seem to know and adapt :)

I don't do canicross but as others, my dog knows that a harness or thick collar are for pulling into. I only have to pick up the line on another collar and I'll feel the slack, he knows the cues. However he has been known to drag me back down mountains lol.

little dog i have on the belt and he will pull.big dog i have on harness and hand lead and jogs by my side.i often let him free and he still jogs by my side.when i go with OH and we have one each big dog pulls more.he also pulls how he should when in a group.
you need the belt over your hips and not in small of the back.
my next step is to connect them as a pair, bit worried about that as together they weigh more than me lol
