Does anyone do this. There is an event next Feb local to me which i thought may give a go. Would give me motivation over Winter to keep fit. Any tips from anyone who does it. Do you need all the special gear or will a collar and lead do as only a one off and only the short course for beginners so dont want to shell out loads of money or are thier cheaper options than those on the website that would be suitable?

A collar and lead is fine for a one-off but it's loads easier to run if you use a waist belt as you can have both hands free. I use a very basic belt which I prefer and is loads cheaper than the Cani-x UK shop ones, along with a bungee lead (ManMat stuff is fab). If using this set up a correctly fitting harness is crucial for the dog - again, ManMat shoulder harnesses are great, there are loads of options though which I am happy to write essays about if you want. :p

Other places to look at gear are Snowpaw store, Inner Wolf and Culpeppers.

Make sure you can run a solid 5k (or 2k if doing the beginners) without the dog first of all, as while you're training the dog to run usefully with you it can be pretty exhausting having to stop/start, pull them this way and that etc. I highly recommend joining Cani-x UK, their forum gives you access to group training days which I recommend you try before you go, means you can make sure your dog can safely pass and be passed on the trails and the know that the rally situation won't blow their brains.
