I really want to take the horses for a good long hack while the weather is still okay! We have a serious lack of off-road riding around our yard and the chasers course seem to be closed at this time of year. I am thinking cannock chase but have no idea how to go about planning a route! Is anyone on here a local that could suggest a good (long!) route for us to use? And may point out places to have a good canter/gallop? We are coming from birmingham direction so would like to park somewhere on that side of the chase.

Would seriously appreciate it!! We will take OS map with us but would be good to have an idea of a route before we go!:)

Sorry I can't help with a route as I just 'go' I manage without a map as I used to go over several times a week. As for canters gallops there are white a few places depending on how wet it is
I'm sure someone else will be able to help better than me. Have fun

Thanks, we've got a map sorted now so will see how we go. Probably park somewhere near the war memorial, not too far from the trekking centre as iv been there before. Any good spots you can suggest for a canter? Hoping it won't be too busy!!

I usually park by the scout place and just wing it on route, lots of places for a canter, never taken a map but make sure i have a phone! Never usually that busy, its such a big place

Jealous! I lived near the Chase for a few years and used to walk the dogs over it. Was horseless then and always thought it would be a wonderful place to hack. Now I have the horse I am too far away...
Have a great time!

we park in Aspen car park, between the German war cemetery and the Katyn memorial - on either side of this car park are 2 huge grass circuits where you can have a canter/gallop! There are lots of grassy tracks off Sherbrook valley, down towards the stepping stones etc but the circular ones are fab and you can go round and round and do interval training etc. We walk the dogs or run routes to check if they are suitable for the horses and always get excited when we find a good canter track ;) We're now starting to explore the Beaudesert side of the Chase which we're not familiar with.

I keep my horses on the chase and it's amazing, but even after spending years going around it, I've still gotten lost haha, it's huge.

If you have a general sense of direction you can usually find your way, and you can use your phone and maps. Also ask people on the way around if you need pointing in the right direction, people are usually pretty helpful.

As for good canter and gallop places there are tonnes. As you go around you will definitely come across them! Marquis drive area has some good gallop tracks, and some big open fields, and then the old raf site has some awesome hills and tracks.

Milford area is also fab but on the other side. If you talk to the trekking centre ask them about the cafe they ride to, we go there on out hacks it's great, there is a horse area you can sit outside on the benches and either hold them or tie them up, we have tea and flapjack though the horses like to steal the flapjack haha!
